We Experiences lots of mechanical issues with our rear-entry modified wheelchair van. We looked for many months for a rear entry van that would carry two power wheelchairs with limited modifications (our wheelchair users can currently transfer). After lots of research, this is what we found:
- •Mercedes MetrisBest available option for transporting one power wheelchair, cargo and 5 passengers in this mid-sized van. The Metris offers better suspension than any minivan and larger rear opening/clearance for loading a chair. If wheelchair dependent individual can transfer, this van can be used with the addition of a rear entry ramp and very little modification.
- •Ford Transit Wagon short wheelbaseThe smallest full sized van we found for transporting two power wheelchairs (must be able to transfer), 8 passengers and cargo. We are trying to locate a manual rear-entry ramp that works well & folds easily. We purchased the low roof van so it would fit in our garage. We have not found a lift that works in the rear of this vehicle without extensive costly modification due to the low clearance/low roof. This van sits much higher off the ground than a mini-van making transfers more difficult.
