For this Memorial Day here is some of my absolute favorite movies about the United States Military in no specific order

  3. Saving Private Ryan
I saw this movie at the movie theater and witnessed not one but THREE grown men bawl their eyes out right in front of me. When US troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, Captain Miller (Tom Hanks) is tasked with finding Pvt James Ryan (Matt Damon) after all three of his brothers are killed in action, in order to send him home. Also stars Ed Burns, Vin Diesel, Barry Pepper, Giovanni Ribisi, Jeremy Davies, Adam Goldberg and Tom Sizemore and is by Steven Spielberg.
  4. Full Metal Jacket
Chances are, you've heard a quote from this movie. "How tall are you? 5 foot 9? I didn't know they stacked shit that high!" It's an excellent film set in the Vietnam era about a new and funny Marine (Matthew Modine) and his observation of how dehumanizing war is. Also stars Vincent D'Onofrio and was directed by Stanley Kubrick.
  5. Inglorious Bastards
One of my absolute fav Quentin Tarantino directed films, this move takes place in Nazi-occupied France, where a group of American Special Forces set about with a plan to kill high ranking Nazi officials at a propaganda movie premier. The group is led by Lt. Aldo Raine played by Brad Pitt and also stars Christoph Walz, Diane Kruger and Michael Fassbender.
  6. Platoon
Directed by Oliver Stone, Charlie Sheen plays the naive new Vietnam recruit who is confronted with the horrors of war. It was released in 1986 and also stars Willem Dafoe, Johnny Depp, Kevin Dillion and Forrest Whitaker.
  7. Born on the Fourth of July
This movie was the first Oliver Stone directed film I ever watched. Tom Cruise plays Ron Kovic in this true story about a man who is paralyzed in the Vietnam War and comes home only to feel betrayed by the country he fought for and becomes a political and human rights activist.
  8. The Hurt Locker
Kathryn Bigelow was the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director for this incredible film. Jeremy Renner is Sgt. James who was recently assigned as head of an Elite Bomb Disposal unit in Iraq. His squad is not a fan of his some-what questionable tactics - even though he always seems to get positive results.
  9. Giphy
  10. Good Kill
I just watched this movie and it blew my effing mind. This is some serious ethical stuff going on in this movie. The man's job is to spend his days killing the Taliban by drone air strikes and Major Thomas Egan (Ethan Hawke) starts to seriously question if the US is just creating more terrorists or doing good for the people. January Jones and Zoë Kravitz (Lenny's daughter) are also great in this film.
  11. Black Hawk Down
U.S. soldiers drop into Somalia to capture two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord and find themselves in a desperate battle with a large force of heavily-armed Somalis. Starring Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Kim Coates 😍, Eric Bana, Tom Sizemore & Hugh Dancy.
  12. The Patriot
2000, Action Historical-Drama with Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger - directed by Roland Emmerich. It tells the story of peaceful Charlestown farmer Benjamin Martin and how he comes to lead the Colonial Militia during the American Revolution.
  13. Courage Under Fire
Denzel Washington is a US Army Officer who has made mistakes in the battlefield and his investigation of Meg Ryan and her worthiness to be the first woman awarded the Medal of Honor.
  14. Band Of Brothers
Ok so technically this was a mini series but it just rocked my face off so much that I had to include it. It's the story of Easy Company of the US Army 101st Airborne division and their mission in WWII Europe from Operation Overlord through V-J Day.
  15. The Monuments Men
A World War II platoon is tasked with rescuing art masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. This cast is unbelievable with George Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, John Goldman and Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham himself, Hugh Bonneville.
