  1. I went to a middle school/high school that ran 7th-12th grade.
  2. In 8th grade, so, right before high school technically started, my mom asked me half heartedly if I wanted to go to boarding school.
  3. She didn't really want me to go, which I understand, so she didn't exactly give it a hard sell.
  4. I love my mother. We're super close. But my parents are divorced and I split my time 50/50 between my mom and my dad. My dad and I...are not super close.
  5. When I thought about boarding school, I thought fancy East Coast prep school.
  6. Because those are the schools that my mom listed as examples.
  7. But also probably because I went to LA's version of those, minus the boarding.
  8. Some people liked it, but I hated my high school. Like, the institution itself and the way I felt it treated me like a statistic or a commodity--just one more student they could add to their great "go on to attend an Ivy" stats, which they use to market the school to parents of LA sixth graders.
  9. But in 8th grade, I was just worried about making new friends. I liked the friends I had.
  10. And when I told my mom that, she didn't argue.
  11. Even though that's normally the sort of worry she'd try to talk me out of.
  12. So I just decided against going to boarding school without giving it much more thought. Neither of us ever looked into other options.
  13. And now I know that I could have gone to one of those awesome United World Colleges, which would have been RIGHT up my alley.
  14. And I could have avoided four years of daily, close-quarters family stuff.
  15. And four more years of my high school.
  16. And I of COURSE would have made new friends.
  17. I would have missed my mom, but it would have been much better overall.
  18. Not going to a cool boarding school (or even a not-so-cool one) is my biggest regret.
  19. And now that I'm thinking about it, I don't think I've ever made another decision based on what my friends are doing.
  20. And I'm always doing things that put me in situations where I don't know anyone, even though that's not my favorite.
  21. Maybe I subconsciously learned something, at least?
