On Thursdays, I work at a women's immigration detention center in Texas. All of these women made harrowing treks to get to the U.S. and are here seeking asylum. They are generally detained for 3-6 months.
  1. Ballparking it, 40.
The worst is when someone speaks only an indigenous language that no one else speaks and it takes weeks to get a translator to explain the very basics of what is going on.
  2. And they get to tell their stories over and over again to asylum officers, deportation officers, lawyers, translators, etc.
All of these people will be judging their credibility. They have to show their scars and get as much documentation as possible. If someone in their family was murdered and they're fleeing the killer, they've often carried photos of dead family member's bodies with them across thousands of miles as proof.
  3. Welcome to America!
