Korean dramas for beginners πŸ‡°πŸ‡·

Eeeek another request to blab about Korean stuff YAY!!!! ~ 😁 Thanks so much for this request, @Veronique! I'll certainly try my best to cover the world of K Dramas for you. Let's get started!! btw: a lingo glossary and list of fave Korean actors & actresses are in the works, so look for those soon ~ 😊 Various credits to Hulu/DramaFever ~
  1. β€’
Just like my K Pop 101 list, I have no idea where to start!
My head is spinning with excitement... πŸŒ€πŸ’₯ I really reeeeally love Korean pop culture, which I know is just totally NOT obvious or anything... πŸ˜‚ My K Pop 101 list, btw: K Pop 101: intro to K pop for beginners πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
  2. β€’
Let's just get to it. Some basics!!
  3. β€’
    What are K Dramas?
K Drama is short for Korean Drama, a type of television series produced in why, Korea, of course!! :)
  4. β€’
It's very common for Korean actors & actresses to film dramas in other countries as well, such as China, etc.
They might also film a joint project, where they work with Chinese, Japanese, etc. actors/actresses.
  5. β€’
Korean actors & actresses, like K Pop idols, are scarily talented, and work very hard ~
  6. β€’
Why are K Dramas so popular?
The better question is why would they NOT be? πŸ˜„ And well, many of us fans like to say we're here for the plot when really, we're abs-obsessed ~ 😍πŸ”₯ HAHA, I tease!! πŸ˜‰ The truth is, there are many a drama that have punched me square in the heart with feels. πŸ’“ The great storytelling and overall uniqueness of Korean culture (especially to a foreigner) simply keeps fans coming back for more! (And yes, sexy actors with chocolate abs keep us coming back for more too! πŸ˜„ γ…‹γ…‹ 🍫)
  7. β€’
πŸŒ„ My theory is come for the abs, stay for the plot πŸŒ„
    πŸ˜†πŸ˜
  8. β€’
    I mean, LOOK.
AAAABS. πŸ’― (Choi Siwon in "She Was Pretty")
  9. β€’
    *Chocolate abs
Well-defined abs that look like sections of a chocolate bar 🍫
  10. β€’
    *γ…‹γ…‹
Sounds like "ke ke." Equivalent of "hehe." What Korean folks might type to indicate laughter ~ πŸ˜„
  11. β€’
Still with me after the abs-iness?
I didn't think so. But try to focus here, because we still have more ground to cover! You can do it, fighting! πŸ’ͺ🏻
  12. β€’
    *Fighting (ν™”μ΄νŒ…)
Something you'll hear a LOT in K Dramas. It's an expression of encouragement, like "You can do it!" Newcomers always struggle with this one at first, like "Fighting what/who?" HAHA ~ Usually said while making a fist type pose, like πŸ’ͺ🏻
  13. β€’
A single K Drama generally has around 16 episodes or so.
Some have less, some have more.
  14. β€’
Relationships in Korean television are different from Western television
Koreans are much more modest than we are here in the West. Not as much emphasis is put on the physical aspect of relationships in television like you often see hereβ€”it can take quite some time for a couple to work up to a kiss or even hand-holding! Let me assure you though, that this fact doesn't take away from the plot at all. Fellow K Drama fans can attest to this. Just trust us: Korean couples are WAY cute!! 😍😍😍😍
  15. β€’
Some typical types of scenes you'll see in K Dramas:
  16. β€’
    Back hugs
Back hugs are like omfg in K Dramas (due to the modesty thing we were just discussing). Sigh, how I wish to be hugged like this by a gorgeous oppa...
  17. β€’
    Back hug in "Yong Pal"
  18. β€’
    *Oppa
Literally means "older brother." Is used by women when addressing guys. It's also used affectionately by women toward non-related (of course) men they like/fancy.
  19. β€’
    Piggyback rides
AMAZINGLY cute event that happens often in K Dramas. Usually a positive sign that things are going well between a pairing ~ How it usually goes is someone gets stupid-drunk, twists their ankle, SOMETHING, to where one person has to carry the other home (yes, there are occasional instances where the woman carried the man home hahaa). Be the drama contemporary, historical, or anything in between, piggyback rides occur ~ They're timeless ~ πŸ˜†πŸ˜Š
  20. β€’
Piggyback ride in "Tomorrow's Cantabile" - It's a twisted thing, secretly hoping that one half of your ship will get really drunk or injured so that the other has to care for them. πŸ˜‚ But hey, they have to fall in LUUUUV (I'm so immature) somehow! :)
  21. β€’
    Eating (a lot) together 🍜🍚
Koreans are cool people who like to eat. A lot! So there's definitely no shortage of scenes in K Dramas where characters are chowing down on various delicious-looking foods, a fact that ALWAYS makes me hungry!! Something that'll save you a lot of heartache (πŸ˜†): don't watch K Dramas on an empty stomach! πŸ˜„
  22. β€’
    From "Let's Eat"
  23. β€’
    Drinking (a lot)
Mainly Soju (Korean rice spirit). Soju is considered to be "the gateway to the piggyback ride." πŸ˜‚ Yep. Fact. πŸ‘πŸ»
  24. β€’
    From "She Was Pretty"
  25. β€’
    Visits to the sauna
Korean saunas, called a jjimjilbang (찜질방), are establishments that are typically open 24 hours a day. They're much MUCH cooler than the saunas you and I (foreigners) are used toβ€”many have lounges, snack bars, etc. You can stay as long as you want, and relax with whoever you want (or alone as well). It's common for families, couples, etc. to visit the sauna, and in K Dramas, the sauna usually comes into play when a couple decides to go be all cutesy & couple-y and hang out at one ~ πŸ’ž
  26. β€’
Jjimjilbang visit in "Lie to Me" - Look at the adorable sauna outfits (common to see), I cannot.
  27. β€’
From "My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox" - Since my screenshot from "Lie to Me" didn't include the adorbz head towel wrap, here's an example of it ~ Look how cute tho πŸ˜†πŸ’•
  28. β€’
Gratuitous shower (and bath and workout and pool and changing and etcccc. asdfghjkl) scenes - Basically any kind of gratuitous shot of the chocolate abs 😍🍫
The men (and occasionally women) of Dramaland do the majority of their really serious thinking and brooding in the showerβ€”a steamy one with plenty of abs shots & running hands through wet hair ~ 😍πŸ”₯ I mean let's face it: it's a tough life being that hot, so sometimes ya just gotta think and/or brood sexily in the shower. OH WELL Β―\_(ツ)_/Β― whatareyagonnado *Stares intensely at TV*
  29. β€’
    Kim Jaejoong in "Spy"
  30. β€’
So Ji Sub in "Oh My Venus"
  31. β€’
Song Joong Ki in "Descendants of the Sun" - BONUS: this is SJK's comeback drama after returning home from the Army. THOSE ABS ARE ARMY ABS RIGHT THURR, LADIES. OMO.
  32. β€’
Choi Siwon in "Oh My Lady"
  33. β€’
Jo Jung Suk in "Oh My Ghostess"
  34. β€’
Oh man. Gathering those screenshots was fun. Thought it would be good to have some examples, ya know.
    For science.
  35. β€’
    *Army
Korean men are expected to complete two years of mandatory military service. How this ties in with K Dramas (and K Pop as well) is that when actors and idols return home, they're RIPPED/even more ripped than before (😍). This = obligatory abs scenes just because πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»
  36. β€’
    *Omo
    "Oh my God"
  37. β€’
OKAY THEN, let's get to some drama recommendations, shall we?? :D
    Kaja (κ°€μž)!! (Let's go!!)
  38. β€’
Look for the ⭐️ because imo those dramas are good for beginners to start with ~ I also pop in with random commentary here and there, indicated by the πŸ’¬ emoji πŸ˜†
Some of these are still in my queue to watch (so many dramas, so little time) and I feel dumb for suggesting some I haven't seen yet. BUT, I want to offer up all the super popular titles for ya that I can think of ~ So give them a go! πŸ˜‰
  39. β€’

    Bridal Mask πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
  43. β€’
πŸ’¬ My thoughts (Bridal Mask) ~
I HAVE to comment because omfg I just adore this drama. My top fave EVER. I burned through all 28 episodes in just 4 days!! Hahahaha I was EXHAUSTED, but could NOT pull myself away from my iPad. And that's not even the craziest partβ€”a friend of mine finished it in TWO days. (!!!!) Warning to you now, though: this is a HEAVY, heavy drama. Really intense. I experienced a really physical reaction to it, because it really was a lot. Very emotional and crazy. But oh how I adore it, RECOMMEND!! πŸ’―

  47. β€’
πŸ’¬ My thoughts (Coffee Prince) ~
My first proper K Drama. Many will likely tell you the same. It really is a good starter drama! :) It began my obsession with the gorgeous Yoon Eun Hyeβ€”her other dramas are awesome too, btw (another of hers is on this list, keep reading)!
  48. β€’
    Doctor Stranger πŸ‡°πŸ‡·

    ⭐️ Good Doctor πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
  53. β€’
πŸ’¬ My thoughts (Good Doctor) ~
"Good Doctor" HAD to be on my list. Not only does my bias, Joo Won, star in this, but this drama is unlike any others I've seen before. The main character, Park Shi On (Joo Won), is an aspiring doctor who has savant syndrome (autism spectrum). I'd never seen an autistic character in a K Drama before, and this topic was addressed so masterfully. I applaud it, ones of my faves ~ πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ» Absolutely heart-warming drama πŸ’˜ Shi On is a precious character who touched my heart ~ πŸ’•

πŸ’¬ My thoughts (Lie to Me) ~
ROMANTIC AF!! I LOVED this drama so much, this is the other Yoon Eun Hye drama I said was on this list ~ It was just πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ‘ŒπŸ» That's all πŸ‘πŸ»
  61. β€’
⭐️ My Love from Another Star πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
  62. β€’
    πŸ’¬ My thoughts (MLFAS) ~
My bestie wanted me to watch this so bad, and one afternoon when I told her I'd started watching, she LOST HER SH*T. I was like O_O is it that good?! The answer is YES. It's that good. I'll just leave it at that. πŸ’•πŸ’―πŸ‘ŒπŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»
  63. β€’
This song from the OST (Original Soundtrack) alone will probably make you want to watch:
  64. β€’
    And this one too:
  65. β€’
    ⭐️ Oh My Ghostess πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
  66. β€’
πŸ’¬ My thoughts (Oh My Ghostess) ~
This drama was a RIOT from beginning to end, really enjoyed it! πŸ‘» Park Bo Young is so so adorable, I can't get over how adorable of an actress she is ~ 😊 Two characters, Bong Sun & Soon Ae, I SWEAR are my spirit animals (especially Soon Ae πŸ˜‚). A bit risquΓ©, sexier than I'm used to for K Dramas in both character behavior & dialogue. I was surprised! But def in a good way, good way for sure! Korea's growing up a bit I think, hehe! ;)
  67. β€’
Can't leave out Soon Ae from the title pic btw haha ~ πŸ‘» Silly pic, too wide to fit in the square :P
  68. β€’
    Oh My Venus πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
  69. β€’
    πŸ’¬ My thoughts (OMV) ~
Fun fun drama, and now that's over, I miss it :( I enjoyed it even more due to the fact that it mirrors my life as of right now. You see, I've been getting fitβ€”I've lost nearly 200 pounds, so I really related to the female lead, Joo Eun ~ Only, I didn't have hot oppas following me around & training me. πŸ˜©πŸ˜† Fun fact: I actually won an OMV poster AUTOGRAPHED by So Ji Sub!! That gorgeous man TOUCHED my poster, AH ~ 😍
  70. β€’
    Look at this beauty (!!!!):
    😍😍😍😍 Thank you, DramaFever πŸ’•

  80. β€’
πŸ’¬ My thoughts (She Was Pretty) ~
This drama is WILDLY popular, and for excellent reason. God, it was so CUTE πŸ˜πŸ’• Had me laughing so much, and warning you now that if you're not already in love with Choi Siwon (from Super Junior), you WILL be while watching!! I had a serious case of Second Lead Syndrome because of his character in this ~ And his facial expressions are ON POINTπŸ‘ŒπŸ»

    ⭐️ Who Are You πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
  86. β€’
πŸ’¬ My thoughts (Who Are You) ~
Because this is an idol drama (stars Ok Taecyeon from 2PM), I honestly went into it thinking it'd be just good ghostly fun, and not much more. Bonus: Taecyeon. But OHHHH how I was surprised!! VERY surprised! This drama kept me guessing from beginning to end, and is now one of my top favorites ~
  87. β€’
    Yong Pal πŸ‡°πŸ‡·
  88. β€’
πŸ’¬ My thoughts (Yong Pal) ~
Super popular during summer/fall 2015. I watched this live (on a weekly basis, as it aired), so no binging (which drove me crazy). Had so much fun following this ~ πŸ’• And it stars my bby Joo Won 😘
