ON THIS DAY (1912): THE TITANIC

  1. Built in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
  2. Launched 31 May 1911
  3. Sister ships, HMHS Britannic, RMS Olympic.
  4. The Titanic sank in the Atlantic in the early morning of 15 April 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage.
  5. 2,224 passengers and crew on board.
  6. But the ship only carried lifeboats for 1,178 people.
  7. More than 1,500 people died.
  8. Public inquiries in the UK and USA led to major improvements in maritime safety.
