  1. Today in 1954, during the Army-McCarthy hearings, attorney Joseph Welch asked Senator Joseph McCarthy “Have you no sense of decency?” A phrase that will be repeated, undoubtedly, many times during the presidential race.
  2. Today in 1973, Secreteriat won the Triple Crown. Those horse races glued the nation to their televisions.
  3. Today in 1898, China leased Hong Kong to Britain for 99 years. Sheesh, the mileage allotment must have been huge.
  4. Today in 1870, Charles Dickens died. It was the worst of times for him, apparently.
