- •Today in 1954, during the Army-McCarthy hearings, attorney Joseph Welch asked Senator Joseph McCarthy “Have you no sense of decency?” A phrase that will be repeated, undoubtedly, many times during the presidential race.
- •Today in 1973, Secreteriat won the Triple Crown. Those horse races glued the nation to their televisions.
- •Today in 1898, China leased Hong Kong to Britain for 99 years. Sheesh, the mileage allotment must have been huge.
- •Today in 1870, Charles Dickens died. It was the worst of times for him, apparently.
