How to Stay Married for 23 Years

  1. Find the right woman.
I did. It's not always been easy, but it has been worth it.
  2. Take your vows seriously.
You stood up in front of everyone and told them what you were going to do, so do it.
  3. Tell the truth.
Especially when it's difficult. It's better to be trusted than liked...unless you're asked if anything makes her look fat. The answer to that is always no.
  4. Don't try to control anyone but yourself.
More easily said than done, but it's important.
  5. Be patient.
    It helps.
  6. Be who you is.
The rules apply to your spouse as well.
  7. Ask for what you need.
You have a better chance of getting it this way.
  8. See a therapist if you need to.
Things get tough. Talking to a therapist, either alone or together, isn't a failure. It means you're trying.
  9. Forgive.
    You'll need to...and you'll need forgiveness too.
  10. Don't cheat.
Ever. Just don't. It's dishonest and gross. Leave first.
  11. Look for reasons to say yes rather than no.
    It's more fun that way.
  12. Have fun with it.
Sometimes you just have to be an idiot. Just do it.
  13. Don't try to fix everything.
Sometimes you just have to shut up and listen.
