How Authors Build Platforms for Their Books

Nonfiction authors...and increasingly fiction authors...are finding they need to have a platform to (1) find an agent & traditional publisher for their books, or (2) sell their own books if they choose to self-publish. A platform is really just a way to gain visibility as a writer. It is about finding your readers. Here are some ways to do it:
  1. 1.
    Write a blog
  2. 2.
    Publish a newsletter
  3. 3.
Engage with people on social media
  4. 4.
    Speak at events
  5. 5.
    Network at conferences
  6. 6.
    Write guest blog posts
  7. 7.
Offer to speak to book clubs
  8. 8.
    Write freelance articles
  9. 9.
    Create podcasts or videos
  10. 10.
Provide a free download to people who join your mailing list
  11. 11.
Write more books & cross-promote your books
  12. 12.
BUT the 11 items above are just tools. They only work if (a) you focus on the ones you can do well and (b) you are clear about your message and who you're trying to reach. If you write a great book, your readers still might not come. You have to go find them or help them find you.
