WHY EVERYONE IS ANXIOUS

  1. We have become a nation of conspicuous maximizers
The pressure to get the best of anything- hamburgers, apartments, dates- totally ruins the appreciation of the object, rendering them instead as the vehicle for validation.
  2. The broader internet changes hypothetical standards before practical ones
Everyone's a gourmet, no one can afford it. The cost of being ahead of the curve is that inefficiency.
  3. We don't know what we want
Outsized validation aside, what do we even want? What do we like? I need The AV club to tell me if I liked an episode and bloggers to tell me what I think culturally.
  4. The burden of self importance
Paranoid anxiety is inverted narcissism. It's hard to let go and be.
