  4. Honesty it was probably the day my Selective Service registration arrived.
    We were not at war but there is something sobering about a little paper card that says (not in so many words) "you are officially old enough to be conscripted to die."

  6. When I drove my dad to the hospital
    Dad was in the fetal position in the backseat, weeping from Trigeminal Neuralgia pain. His neurologist was three hours away at Emory, waiting for him. My mom was with us, but they're terrified of Atlanta traffic even on a good day. So I drove 90mph the whole way and took over as the grownup that day, and every day until he'd had his surgery and returned home. The tables turned that day, for sure. I was 39, but finally an adult in their eyes.

  11. I was 20 and living away from home at university. I dropped a wine glass, it broke and it dawned on me that no one else was going to clean it up for me. That's the moment I really realized I wasn't a kid and I had to rely on myself and not my parents.
