Just because a movie has non-human characters or involves magic of some sort, I don't think it qualifies as a "Halloween" movie. Nor do all horror or all ghost movies. It's a special chemistry of circumstance and plot points.
  1. Halloween - the original
    Needs no explanation
  2. Halloween - the Rob Zombie version
A remake that's surprisingly great on its own.
  3. Paranormal Activity - 1, 2, 3
You should be scared when watching a Halloween movie.
  4. Scream
    Modern classic.
  5. Ghostbusters
Tremendously fun movie. One of those movies that's a rite of passage (oh a new list idea!).
  6. Hocus Pocus
You don't get more quintessential than this, regardless of age.
  7. Nightmare on Elm Street
Too much sentimentality to put into words.
  8. Young Frankenstein
A classic if there ever was one.
  9. The Return of the Living Dead
The cheesy brother to Night of the Living Dead. If you don't like scary movies but want to partake in the holiday, this is a film for you.
  10. Nosferatu
Silent film released in 1922. One of the best films of all time. The epitome of classic horror. Still stands the test of time.
