Giving Tuesday 2016

After a weekend of consumerism, it's a good day for a different kind of health cleanse. According to the NY Times, last year #givingtuesday raised $117 million for charities in more than 70 countries! I wrote this in 2015: GIVING TUESDAY: SOME CAUSES WORTH SUPPORTING and below are a few additions.
  1. American Immigration Council
Started in 1987, AIC works to "strengthen America by honoring our immigrant history and shaping how Americans think about and act towards immigration." With a Pres-elect Trump about to take power, this couldn't be more important. ACI serves immigrants (old and new) and refugees through education and legal aid, and does policy and advocacy work as well. More: www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org
  2. Equal Justice Initiative
Just Mercy by EJI founder Bryan Stevenson is easily the most important book I've read so far this year. EJI works to end mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the US. Read the book ASAP. www.eji.org
  3. Your local 826 chapter
826 was founded in 2002 by Dave Eggers and Ninive Calegari and offers creative and fun programs that help under-served students with writing, etc. each chapter has a cool theme, and many have stores that go along with it. For instance the DC chapter has a magic store and @826LA is all about time travel. Find your local chapter: www.826national.org
