My 2017 Oscar Hopes

  1. Best Picture
Such a hard choice, came down to this or Lion for me. But full disclosure, I haven't yet seen Moonlight(‼️), Fences, or Manchester by the Sea.
  2. Best Animated Film
Kubo and the Two Strings was a close second for me
  3. Best Documentary Feature
Haven't seen most in this category, but even if I had (with maybe the exception of I Am Not Your Negro), I think this likely would still be my pick. I work in criminal justice, and this documentary tells truth to power in an almost devastating way that cannot be ignored.
  4. Best Foreign Film
I haven't seen any of them yet, PLEASE FORGIVE ME. Same with all short films because I am a sad amateur.
  5. Best Actor
Well this is awkward, but of all the nominees on this list, I've only seen Ryan Gosling in La La Land. And he was fantastic! But I'd have picked Chris Pine in Hell or High Water or Dev Patel in Lion (instead of as supporting actor) for this. And while in positive Viggo Mortensen and Denzel Washington have amazing performances, since I haven't seen them I'm foregoing this category—come at me.
  6. Best Actress
  7. Best Supporting Actor
Dev Patel, Lion but I love you Mahershala I just haven't seen Moonlight i'm sorrryyy
  8. Best Supporting Actress
    Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
  9. Best Adapted Screenplay
I'd also be pretty happy if Lion or Arrival won
  10. Best Original Screenplay
Would also maybe be fine if La La Land won.
  11. Best Director
Damien Chazelle (La La Land). Would also be happy with Denis Villeneuve (Arrival).
  12. Best Cinematography
  13. Best Original Song
How Far I'll Go, Moana. I listen to this song no less than 3x a day. Bonus La La Land hot take: Audition is a far better song than City of Stars.
  14. Best Original Score
The music in this movie is one of its strong suits and completely elevates it and makes it.
  15. Best Visual Effects
  16. Best Production Design
  17. Best Costume Design
    Florence Foster Jenkins
  18. Best Makeup and Hairstyling
  19. Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing.
Honestly—not that I'm really qualified to judge anything—I am so completely MOST unqualified to judge these categories. I just don't know enough about what these entail, what differentiates good or great editing from truly Oscar worthy editing.
