A list in the ground...

yesterday during the fieldschool we had to dig a profile pit. This is basically a hole in the ground in which you can see the how the soil was used over time.

  2. The darkest layer is soil that has been disturbed by ploughing. You can see bits of corn plant zich means that the ploughing happened less than 3 years ago because after that the corn will have completely decomposed.
  3. The middle layer is also disturbed soil, but this one is because of deep ploughing. This happens only once every 25 years and is like the first layer quite boring...
  4. The last layer is the most interesting... This layer dates all the way back to the last ice age when the ground here was constantly frozen. In the bottom left corner you can see a form of cryotubation (disturbance of the ground by ice). Something very special according to my teacher. So... to make a long story short: it is realy old earth...😉
