WEST SIDE STORY, SET UPS, AND DENNY'S (OR HOW I MET MY HUSBAND) ❤️

  1. Sophomore year of college, January 2007
I was fresh off a breakup and listening to way too much Kelly Clarkson.
  2. We were both in our school musical, West Side Story
He was a Shark and I was a Jet. Because of my break up haze I wasn't paying much attention to guys, but it was hard to miss the pale Jewish looking guy who was using bronzer and hair gel to pass off as Puerto Rican. I remember thinking he was funny, but that was pretty much it.
  3. We had mutual friends, including my roommate, so we kept bumping into each other after the musical.
I remember at one point it went from accidentally bumping into each other to hoping we'd bump into each other to knowing exactly when he was usually in the dining commons and strategically planting myself there at the same time.
  4. My roommate and another mutual friend gave us a nudge.
My roommate said she'd "be totally ok if I ever wanted to date Will Rowland." <<this was before I even liked him. Another mutual friend not-so-subtly asked me how I felt about Will Rowland. She was just "asking for a friend."
  5. We started hanging out more.
He would drop by our room 10 minutes before open hours were over and it drove me batty. He later told me it was because he was afraid he'd say something stupid if he stayed any longer. 💙
  6. There were many late night Facebook chats and one hilarious 2 AM run to Denny's.
Will told me "a bunch of people" were all going to go hang out at Denny's. In reality he had only asked me, so he was scrambling to find other people to tag along. In the end, he made his roommate go so it wouldn't be completely obvious this was just an excuse to hang out with me. So basically our first date was chaperoned by my husband's roommate. It was awkward and totally wonderful.
  7. By spring, it was pretty obvious where this was going. He asked me to be his girlfriend in May.
Our first official date was at the "fancy" Chinese place in Jackson, MI.
  8. Several long distance stints, many moonlit dances sharing iPod buds, and a few hundred Bertolli frozen pasta dates later, Will asked me to marry him on Easter Sunday 2009.
    I said yes.
  9. We were married on August 22nd, 2009.
Yea, you read that right. It is in fact possible to plan a wedding in four months.
  10. We're six years in now and enjoying our first go at parenthood. I wouldn't want to do life with anyone else. He's the kindest, funniest, most generous man I know. And that's why I love West Side Story and Denny's. ❤️
