Our Trip "Out West"

This was a hiking trip using Vegas as our hub. All the negative portions were dealt with elsewhere. This is the nice stuff. Our itinerary with commentary.
  1. 1.
Super early flight from JFK to Las Vegas. We had to wake early, but getting a full day in Vegas out of it seemed worthwhile.
  2. 2.
    Arrived on time.
Yay Alamo Rent a Car, for giving us a discount on upgrading to a small SUV.
  3. 3.
Checked into the Cromwell(for one night).
We could have skipped this and gone straight to Zion, but I wanted a buffer in case there were flight delays. The Cromwell is a small hotel by any standards, very nicely decorated, great staff, and the casino's limits are low for such a nice place(that's a good thing). Some negatives, but that's for another time.
  4. 4.
    Brunch at Giada's(in The Cromwell)
My thin wife is biased against Giada, Delorentis because she does not think someone that "model thin" could actually like food as much as she claims. Possibly, but the brunch was creative and delicious and the restaurant is gorgeous, and the staff rocks. No bad seats. At this point we had been awake for about 14 hours with minimal food. So it was all great.
  5. 5.
    Pre-hiking shopping
We walked the strip and bought some supplies for hiking, snacks, liquor, etc...
  6. 6.
Tried to go to the pool at the Cromwell, that adventure is for another time.
  7. 7.
Saw Absinthe, the show at Caesars. Amazing!!!!!!!!!! Best Show in Vegas.
  8. 8.
    Next morning, off to Zion
  9. 9.
    Zion is super organized.
No car allowed and the free shuttle runs every few minutes.
  10. 10.
Springdale is the town with Zion's gate.
Our hotel (Desert Pearl Inn) was fantastic. This is our room's rear porch.
  11. 11.
    Day two at Zion
  12. 12.
    Off to Bryce Canyon
Zion is roughly 2 hours from Vegas, and add another 2 to get to Bryce.
  13. 13.
Zion and Bryce are only 90 miles apart, but one comes across as a high end ski resort, and the other pretends it's the old West (all the time)
  14. 14.
    Bryce Canyon Day One
  15. 15.
Astronomy Class in Bryce at night.
  16. 16.
    Bryce Canyon Day Two
Funny, that is not.us, I took this to show the Ranger that people were going off the trail here and they should make.the.signs more.clear.
  17. 17.
The drive to Monument Valley. A new Planet every Hour.
Monument Valley is also in Utah, but the 7 hour drive between Bryce and Monument Valley is AMAZING.
  18. 18.
Sorry no pictures, but Google, Capital Reef, Grand Escalante, Lunar Mesa, and Hanksville and you get the idea.
  19. 19.
    The Moki Dugway
On the drive, the road stops, turns to gravel, and switchbacks take you down about 2000 feet. Holy F!
  20. 20.
    Monument Valley(Navajo Nation)
Yes I am better than you. Just kidding, but this is my favorite picture ever, and it was taken by our Navajo guide.
  21. 21.
    More Monument Valley
  22. 22.
    Even More Monument Valley
  23. 23.
A Blessing from our Hosts for our Travels.
  24. 24.
Antelope Canyon, not worth the trip just for this,but.....
Beautiful, but you could build the whole thing full scale, out of fiberglass, and put it in your local town park.
  25. 25.
Back to Vegas and a flight home, but..........first...
  26. 26.
Aria was calling and we had to relax.
  27. 27.
    A great trip, very enriching.
