6 local doughnuts you need to try
Happy National Doughnut Day! For years, Britt's was the only name in doughnuts in the Cape Fear region, but my how the times have changed.
- •Dat Ghost Fire at Wake N BakeTradition schmadition. This is easily the most unorthodox, yet enjoyable, entry on our list. And you’ll have to haul down to Wake N Bake Donuts at 1401 N Lake Park Blvd. in Carolina Beach to sample this scorchingly sweet number. Filed with a silky chocolate cherry cream, this doughnut drops any pretense of politeness with the ghost pepper-infused glaze and candied jalapeño topper.
- •Raspberry white chocolate at One Belle BakeryIf you don’t love One Belle Bakery Anna Echols enough for being the only contender in the mix to insist on the grammatically correct spelling of “doughnuts,” then perhaps this classic flavor profile presented as an elegant glaze on her new line of yeast doughnuts will seal the deal. Check her sweets out at 1616 Shipyard Blvd. in Wilmington.
- •Sea salted caramel at LoopsThe salted caramel schtick has been hot for nearly a decade now — the New York Times featured the combination way back in 2008 when Starbucks and Häagen-Dazs jumped on board — but the Wrightsville Beach-based Loops Homemade Donuts at 32 N. Lumina Ave. has made it their own with the addition of Brownie Brittle crumbs to the mix.
