  3. Between freshman and sophomore years.
  4. Working my first job at a local pet store.
  5. Babysat a ton too.
  6. But still went to Spanish camp.
  7. Got my braces off.
Threw up when they took the impressions for my retainer and had to walk myself home in pukey clothes to change before starting a shift at work.
  8. This Time Around.
  9. Fly.
I said, "Dad, you like the Dixie Chicks!" He said, "I LIKED the Dixie Chicks". I listened to them A LOT.
  10. Bought myself a nice stereo with my own money. I felt very grown up.
I had a ton of CDs and loved different kinds of music, but I only remember Hanson and the Dixie Chicks from that summer.
  11. Lots of Godfather's Pizza with my friends because it was in the middle of town and nobody could drive.
  12. Camping in people's backyards.
We just played cards and talked about boys. We were very well-behaved kids.
  13. My friend Emily and I were constantly trying to scam rides to the mall from our parents.
Both of us had dads who were home most summer days. "What do you NEED at the mall?" Missing the point guys.
  14. I was trying to balance having friends in different groups.
It was really hard. Teenage girls can be terrible.
  15. TRL. Every damn day.
  16. Daria
  17. Friends
  18. SNL reruns
  19. Discovered I was allowed to read books written for grown ups.
  20. White Oleander by Janet Fitch
  21. Where the Heart Is by Billie Letts
  22. The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingslover
  23. House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
  24. Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt
  25. Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephan Chobsky
  26. But still reread a stack of Judy Blume.
  27. Went to the Como Zoo with my grandpa.
A time before we all had cell phones, we never found the other family members we were supposed to meet there. But we ate ice cream and watched the seal show. ❤️
  28. Spent a week in St. Paul and felt cool because it's a big city and I'm from the sticks.
But I was just spending days babysitting my little cousins and nights chillin' with my aunt and watching TV.
  29. Vacation on the Wisconsin side of Lake Superior. Family and I got lost on a hike on Madeline Island. For a couple of hours.
They still laugh. I'm still mad.
