The Dark Side of the Golden State
  1. The fact that we are the biggest agricultural producer in the world, thanks to illegal, underpaid migrant workers in totally abusive situations.
I'm just not down with my quality of life being inversely correlated with someone else's.
  2. The fact that we collectively spend a gazillion hours in traffic, that every 3rd person is an engineer, and that no one has yet figured out or funded an effective public transport system.
  3. The fact that all we hear about is the drought and I haven't seen a single public campaign about measures/recommendations to cut down on water use in homes or businesses.
There's actually a lot we can do alone, together.
  4. The fact that when my (European) parents visited for the first time I felt like I had to warn them in advance about the harrowing homeless people situation.
