1. Let's call it Parental Leave and just watch the interest increase
  2. Leave is a singular, finite concept- now on/off ramping - that is the thing!
  3. Boss Lottery is all about how lucky you may be, highly individualized, does not scale or avoid "motherhood penalty"
  4. Cultural Shifts are what is needed to fully and successfully integrate the concept of parents (or anyone with any outside demands/responsibilities) as employees.
  5. Make Mama friends and learn what they know before you even think about approaching HR re leave.
  6. Know what you want (as best you can)- HR does not know.
  7. You will not be the same person once you've had baby 1 or 2 or 6- do not expect yourself to function the same as before you left. And advise your DRs and bosses to manage expectations accordingly- do so with pride
  8. Speaking of pride- the private sector is finally taking a tiny amount of pride in bringing families back to work with ease and as a matter of course. Positive reinforcement will go a long way in this narrative.
