My introduction to Harry Potter

  1. The Sorcerers Stone was published when I was a junior in high school.
Although I had heard about its popularity (even my 80 year old grandpa who typically read serious non-fiction was reading it!), I didn't have much of a desire to read it myself.
  2. My boyfriend (now husband) was reading the series, and asked me to go see the movies with him as each one came out.
I adored the movies, but for some reason still did not want to read the books. Which is weird for me, as I love to read.
  3. After we saw The Prisoner of Azkaban in the theater, I left with so many questions that my boyfriend convinced me that I needed to start reading the books for everything to make sense.
He was probably just tired of answering my questions.
  4. My grandma bought me the paperbacks of the first five books (all that had been published at the time) for Christmas that year.
It took me a little under a month to read all five and I finally understood what all the hype was about.
  5. We were engaged by the time The Half-Blood Prince was published, and decided to purchase only one book.
He would read it first, with the understanding that I would get to read the final book of the series first when it came out.
  6. Lo and behold, shortly before The Deathly Hallows was released, my darling husband decides that he can't wait for me to finish the book before reading it himself. So we bought two copies.
It was fun being able to talk about it while we were reading it, but who needs two copies of the same book?
  7. We continued seeing each of the movies in the theater, until Deathly Hallows Part 2.
  8. We had just moved to a new city where we didn't know anyone with our 4 month old son. Since we didn't have a babysitter, we decided to take him with us to see it at the Drive-In.
He slept most of the time except for the climax of the movie , which he cried through.
  9. Fast forward five and a half years, and we give that same little boy the Illustrated Sorcerer's Stone for Christmas.
  10. We are now halfway through The Chamber of Secrets, and he's obsessed in the best possible way. We listen to the soundtrack in the van. He calls his stuffed animals Hedwig. We're planning a Harry Potter themed birthday party.
And sometimes I walk into a room to find him and his brother (who likes and does anything big brother does) just staring at the books and movies 😍
