The early 2000s were the best time for indie music and I have the proof

Wherein I'm a crotchety old grandma about music and say today's shit is shit
  1. Okay but first we must recognize that Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea came out in 1998
It is perfect do not @ me. It also set up a little less than a decade of perfect music.
  2. I now will make my case
  3. The White Stripes' best albums were in 2001 and 2003
Um Elephant and White Blood Cells are the greatest ever they have songs like Seven Nation Army which every band kid learned on every instrument and also Fell in Love With a Girl which is perfect. This is before Jack White gets publicly gross.
  4. Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie came out in 2003
Perfect for long distance indie kids but also had Tiny Vessels
  5. Arcade Fire's Funeral Album, which has their most popular song Wake Up on it, came out in 2004
But yo this song is actually amazing
  6. Maps by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs came out in 2004
This song is so perfect that Beyoncé sampled it on Lemonade. Also it is indie girl gold. "Wait, they don't love you like I love you" was written on zillions of notebooks of girls with bangs amiright?
  7. We haven't even started on Rilo Kiley yet. I mean Portions for Foxes came out in 2004 and that was when the band hit their stride
I cut my bangs like Jenny Lewis after seeing a feature on her in a 2008 issue of Under the Radar...
  8. The Sunset Tree by the Mountain Goats came out in 2005
This Year is so relevant now though and also the whole album gets me AMPED
  9. The Crane Wife by the Decemberists came out in 2005
Ugh this piece of music is amazing. I love them
  10. The most popular album by Bright Eyes, I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning came out in 2005
Have you made a mix CD with First Day of My Life for your crush? If not, ur not a true fan 😎
  11. DO YOU REMEMBER THE KOOKS? 2006 was their year
Songs like Ooh La and Always Where I Need to Be! Ugh so fuckin good.
  12. The Greatest by Cat Power came out in 2006
Tavi had one of her songs play on Style Rookie when you opened the page which was way cool. She had Neutral Milk Hotel before that IDK WHY I REMEMBER THIS
  13. Fluorescent Adolescent by The Arctic Monkeys came out in 2007
Ugh and who doesn't think this EP is perfect?
  14. Also anyone remember Flathead by the Fratellis? 2007 man.
Listened to this incessantly on my fake iPod. Was sad I didn't have a Zune. For real.
  15. Back in Your Head by Tegan & Sarah was a 2007 jam like no other
Fuck this song soooo good. On repeat for the whole year.
  16. Dashboard by Modest Mouse came out in 2007
And Float On came out in 2004. Both songs are legitimately perfect ✨
  17. Vampire Weekend's first album also came out in 2008.
    Walcott, Mansfield Roof, etc
  18. Juno and Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist demand mention
Both had such perfect soundtracks like truly go back and listen to them and try to change one fucking song
  19. Basically everything Saddle Records did was amazing (Spoon! Rilo Kiley! Bright Eyes!)
  20. Things started getting either really Americana or really electronic in like 2010, and while I'm like overjoyed that Dawes and Fleet Foxes and Mitski and so many other good bands exist, I think that the best of indie was the early 2000s
And yes I know it's such an old lady thing to say but I'm gonna say it damn it!
