THINGS I'VE OVERHEARD MY DAUGHTER SAY WHILE SHE WAS PLAYING

  1. (Clears throat) "Well, I'm sure you're wondering why you're all here."
Spoken to a roomful of imaginary people, using a hairbrush for a microphone.
  2. "Nellie, I just want you to know that I admire your bravery and your willingness to put yourself out there."
Said to her least-favorite doll while tucking them all in for the night.
  3. "Okay-you be the mom, and I'll be the teenager who sneaks out at midnight to go pursue her dreams."
Overheard during a play date with her friend Martha Jane.
  4. "First of all, I think you know that I would rather swallow a hundred swords of fire than have indoor recess."
She wanted me to hear this--her after-the-fact response to an earlier conversation in which I'd suggested it might be too cold to play outside the next day.
