MY FAVORITE BROADWAY MUSICAL SCORES FROM EACH YEAR I'VE BEEN ALIVE

Thought I'd do a little twist in the movies list that's been going around! Both originals and revivals included. 🎤
  1. 1995: Victor/Victoria
Not much else to know from this year. Julie Andrew rocks it though!
  2. 1996: Rent
Honorable mentions: The revivals of A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum and Chicago
  3. 1997: Titanic
A tough choice between this and The Lion King (which is also amazing by the way!)
  4. 1998: Ragtime
Only picked over Cabaret (Alan Cumming 😍) because Audra McDonald and Marin Mazzie are queens
  5. 1999: Annie Get Your Gun
This was a struggle because it's the only musical I know even a little bit about from this year
  6. 2000: Aida
Such a rich and amazing score, and an empowering female lead to boot!
  7. 2001: Urinetown
The song "The Privilege to Pee" will make you wet yourself with laughter
  8. 2002: Thoroughly Modern Millie
Flappers. Tap dancing. Sutton Foster. 'Nuf said
  9. 2003: Wicked
As overused this is, still a phenomenal cast and an amazing score
  10. 2004:Assassins
One of Neil Patrick Harris's earlier roles on Brodway. So good. Listen to "Another National Anthem." Do it.
  11. 2005: Little Women
One of my favorite books and movies, so no surprise here. Guilty pleasure song to belt out when I'm alone: "Astonishing." Honorable Mentions: Spamalot and The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
  12. 2006: Spring Awakening
Duncan Shiek created an amazing score that blended more traditional musical theatre score with rock influences. The book is also a powerful and insightful look in the oppression of teenage sexuality. A win-win. 👌🏼Honorable mentions: Mary Poppins, A Chorus Line, Company, Mary Poppins, and The Threepenny Opera.
  13. 2007: Young Frankenstein
Sutton Foster can do no wrong. Honorable mention: Legally Blonde
  14. 2008: The Little Mermaid
One of my favorite Disney musicals! Also close behind: Shrek the Musical (I had to restrain myself because I've put Sutton on here three times already), [title of show], and In the Heights
  15. 2009: Hair
Honorable mentions: Next to Normal and West Side Story
  16. 2010: The Addams Family
Nathan Lane is Gomez Addams so you need nothing more out of your life! Honorable mention: La Cage aux Folles and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
  17. 2011: Godspell
Good show, not my first choice though. Honorable mentions: War Horse and Catch Me if You Can
  18. 2012: Chaplin
So underappreciated!! Honorable mentions: Bring It On, Ghost, Newsies (a close second!), Peter and the Starcatcher, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Once
  19. 2013: First Date
Do you like Zachary Levi? You will not be disappointed. Honorable mentions: Pippin, Matilda, Kinky Boots, and Hands on a Hardbody
  20. 2014: Cabaret
Had to get my Alan Cumming. The man brings a completely different take to the Emcee than in his '99 performance of the same role. An extremely tight race with Aladdin, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, Bullets Over Broadway, Honeymoon in Vegas, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, If/Then, and Rocky
  21. 2015: Hamilton
This shouldn't surprise anyone. How can you not love this show!! It got some great competition though: Allegiance, Fiddler on the Roof, Finding Neverland, Fun Home, Something Rotten!, The King and I, and the sign language infusion Spring Awakening revival!
  22. 2016: Waitress
It's early, but this is looking to be a fantastic hit! Also superb: She Loves Me, Disaster!, and American Psycho
