15 TIMES MY HEART WAS HAPPY IN 2015 πŸ“‚

Happy ~DRAFTMAS~ /// Inspired by @smirthnut
  1. 1.
    Spring Break - Miami
My roommates and I splurged on a trip to South Beach & pent ourselves up in a 1 BR AirBnB. This trip was one of my first real moves towards independence. Sprinkle in some naughty decisions here-n-there 😜
  2. 2.
Gaffing the largest student production on campus
All at the prompting of @oliviapeace πŸ™„ it was an extremely weird experience to have creative control in such a large capacity. Like, people listened to me?! Folks didn't really know my potential until then, but my ass was well on the way to graduation πŸ˜‚
  3. 3.
    GRADUATING
Bitch. When I tell you I earned this. I was so ready to leave school. Although I love learning & discovery very much, my soul couldn't take the stress anydamnlonger
  4. 4.
    Teaching film
I talk mad shit about this experience mostly because of the leadership, rarely because of the kids. They taught me so much about leading & teaching (and how hard it is!). Their artistic abilities gave me hope for the future of the craft.
  5. 5.
    Actually finishing a short film
All my fellow filmmakers know how hard this can be. Taking this film all the way through composition & color was a new experience. Shouts to @lstblkgrl

    "Sabbatical" in the Bay
Ran away to Oakland for a month when I thought my future was nonexistent. Perched up on my sister's couch and helped her move that shit, too. But God clearly has a sense of humor because this eventually led to…

    Interning at my dream company
And feeding my passion for documentary film. I learned more about the craft in 3 months than I did my 4 years in school. It had its fair share of tears & depression, but I'm so thankful that I took the risk
  8. 8.
Visiting @aprilkquioh in MN for Halloween
And learning there are actually 12,000 lakes - wtf? Anyway, I was a bag of tears by this point so I had to run away. Highlights include becoming her mother's new favorite, learning how to start a grill, and raunchy MN nightclubs.
  9. 9.
    Finding a church home
A task I've been actively avoiding in my 20s. It's hella multicultural & subversive, putting the Gospel at the center of its mission. It's pushed me to learn more about Christ these past few months
  10. 10.
    Meeting artistic fairy godmother #1
Ava DuVernay! We chatted about the lack of PoCs in the industry. I thanked her for all she's done to pave a way for little black girls like me. Promptly fainted after this photo
  11. 11.
    Meeting artistic fairy godmother #2
Mara Brock-Akil. One of the brightest & loveliest souls I've ever been around. She had no air of arrogance or fame around her. I damn near pissed myself mustering up the courage to give her my business card (but I did it!). Still wondering about her hair regimen πŸ‘€

    Dope concert after dope concert
Including, but not limited to, Miguel, Mick Jenkins, T-Pain, and Chance. Pictured is Miguel's free bird lookin ass trying to crowd surf at the Oakland Theater
  13. 13.
Shooting more than I can keep count
Music videos, narratives, documentaries. Even in my worst of slumps, shooting takes me to a higher place
  14. 14.
    My grandpa turned 92
Safe to say he's got the juice. Here's a blurry pic of him looking shady
  15. 15.
    My cousin's 30th bday/graduation from law school
My most recent excursion in ratchetry (see: GROWING UP IN A COOL ASS FAMILY). I never ever get to see all my cousin's anymore, so we roadtripped to Atlanta for 2 days, bought out a VIP section, and probably got banned from the W πŸ˜‚ but it was a terrific way to close out 2015
