1. Because of Winn Dixie, Kate DiCamillo
My first favorite book. It deals with a lot of big messy things that I was probably too young to understand and I mostly liked it because it was about a dog. But I'd like to think some of those big ideas still got in my head somehow.
  2. Wild, Cheryl Strayed
I don't consider myself a writer but if one day I do I hope my voice is like Cheryl Strayed's.
  3. Not That Kind of Girl, Lena Dunham
I almost cried reading the part about Lena's dissociation. It was eerie reading someone's experience with something so hard to define and relating to it on such a deep and fundamental level. The presence of this book on my shelf is profoundly comforting.
