Before I was born my dad found a little black kitten in the engine of his car.
  2. β€’
He climbed into the front seat and heard something strange, so, thankfully before turning on the car, he climbed underneath and found a kitten huddling there for warmth.
  3. β€’
That is the story as I remember it.
  4. β€’
The cat was almost all black with only a white spot on his chest. He had green eyes.
  5. β€’
    Dad named his Pappin.
  6. β€’
But we never called him that.
  7. β€’
I think the name changed when my older sister was born and she liked the book Pat the Bunny. Pappin became Pat the Cat
  8. β€’
And that's what we called him always. It sort of slurred into Patta-Cat.
  9. β€’
Pat the Cat was a predator.
  10. β€’
Every night we let him out on the front porch of our little Virginia home, and he went hunting. He'd bring back birds and mice and all sorts of creatures in the morning.
  11. β€’
    But he always came home.
  12. β€’
    Then we moved to Alabama.
  13. β€’
Pat the Cat didn't know the area, so he couldn't go on the prowl at night.
  14. β€’
    He took to sleeping inside.
  15. β€’
    He was getting older anyway.
  16. β€’
Then the next year we moved again to Greensboro, NC.
  17. β€’
When we arrived and took Pat the Cat to get registered we were told he had to have a leukemia vaccine.
  18. β€’
But Pat the Cat was almost 13 years old.
  19. β€’
He was in great health, but his body couldn't handle the vaccine.
  20. β€’
    It gave him leukemia.
  21. β€’
Large tumors formed on his side.
  22. β€’
To my 8yo self they looked like large wads of bubble gum stuck in his black fur.
  23. β€’
He started sleeping next to me on my bed at night.
  24. β€’
    He stopped being a predator.
  25. β€’
He wanted to be petted more and comforted.
  26. β€’
The night they put him to sleep I didn't go along.
  27. β€’
    I slept over at a friend's house.
  28. β€’
    I cried myself to sleep.
  29. β€’
Pat the Cat was the first pet I knew.
  30. β€’
The only cat I ever liked.
  31. β€’
    A predator.
  32. β€’
    A friend.
  33. β€’
    And I still miss him.
