THOUGHTS I HAD DURING MY COLLEGE GRADUATION TODAY

Context: I was homeschooled during high school, so I've never done the whole graduation thing before. Also I graduated from a tiny Christian liberal arts university, so it's not a hella long ceremony (208 graduates).
  1. Oh god, I already packed all my bobby pins.
  2. How on earth am I going to get this cap to stay on my head?
Good news, a friend had extra bobby pins. Coming in clutch. (Thanks for the solid English major quote, Shakespeare)
  3. Okay well I refuse to allow this cap to push my bangs into my eyes so I'll just wear it on the back of my head I guess?
Spoiler alert: this is not how it's supposed to look.
  4. How long are they going to make us wait to take this class picture?
    Answer: ~30 minutes
  5. How long are they going to make us wait before we line up to walk?
    Answer: ~45 minutes
  6. Oh man, everyone's staring at us. Where are my parents sitting? They could be anywhere.
  7. I'm so glad I went with flats instead of heels.
(This thought after they had us remain standing for the invocation, university hymn, opening prayer, etc.)
  8. Oh, he definitely LOOKS like a lawyer.
(This about the commencement speaker, whom our president was introducing as a practicing attorney—at which point I immediately knew which person he was on stage. IT'S A LOOK.)
  9. Yikes, is he going to read from his notes the whole time?
Spoiler alert: yes, yes he is
  10. Ugh please stop talking about politics that's just not what this day is for.
  11. Seriously stop this is so annoying.
(Paired with frequent eye-rolling at "our society is decaying" and "we have to stand by our morals" comments.)
  12. IF THAT BABY SCREAMS ONE MORE TIME…
This was a very empty threat, obvi, but man, just take the baby out. Don't make this worse for everyone.
  13. Oh god, it's happening, the row in front of us is walking up
This was the first moment I felt nervous about any of it. My face was probably something like 😳
  14. IT'S ALMOST MY TURN WOW
  15. I have to make sure they pronounce my last name like an S and not a Z.
  16. Okay it's my turn, don't trip. Don't make a stupid face for all these pictures. Don't mess this moment up.
  17. I DID IT WOW THIS IS CRAZY
  18. Oh my dad's screaming my name while I walk back to my seat, very cool, not embarrassing.
  19. Why am I still shaky? What if I'm stuck like this forever??
(Seriously though once I sat back down my hands/legs would NOT STOP SHAKING. Anxiety popping up at just the right time.)
  20. I did it.
  21. It's done.
  22. I have to find all my friends
(Note me in the middle with the super far back cap…)
  23. And professors
  24. And family members
  25. For so many pictures.
  26. Everyone's congratulating everyone. This is crazy.
  27. I can't believe I just did that.
  28. Now what?
(Note the face of uncertainty as I leave my apartment for the last time. At least I can call myself an alumnus now?)
