Foods that call my name when I approach the kitchen (and foods that should speak up)

  1. Pretzel thins singing cheerfully from a bright blue and white bag on the counter.
(Hummus, inaudible from its high shelf in the fridge.)
  2. An insistent wheel of Babybel cheese, begging to be unwrapped from its red wax swaddling.
(Celery, stretched out stiff and silent in the crisper.)
  3. Semisweet chocolate chips whooping as they escape a torn yellow bag in the cupboard.
(Chubby honey crisp apples not 12 inches below, softly losing their shine in a crowded bowl.)
  4. Chewy salted caramels, oozing a sweet jazz melody from their revealing wax wrappers.
(Kale. Dark, dumb kale. Who bought that anyway?)
