In my opinion, based on what I have come across personally. (I use screenwriting to mean both film and television.)
  1. South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone explain how to write in this MTVU special.
Specific, rigorous, big picture and little picture. These are the rules from the guys most associated with breaking rules.
  2. Die Hard
Watch carefully and notice how economical the film is from the opening shot. Every scene and every choice works towards conveying the most information about character, plot, and stakes in the most viscerally entertaining and emotionally engaging way. These principles can be applied towards almost any work of film or entertainment in any genre.
  3. Watch any great film with the sound off.
A famous device for studying how film works.
