I’ve been getting a lot of curious list requests. I’m not even sure they’re all serious (The Different Ways to Take Butt Pics, @ChrisK?), but this one’s for @LevNovak. By no means am I an expert in any of these areas, but I could probably write a List about them to convince you otherwise!
  1. Being a whitewashed Asian-American living in America
    C625fc9a 641c 4168 b615 098e7b178c07
I can write three lists about this. We can begin with having blond dreadlocks and end with being genuinely dumbfounded when my first son turned out to be Asian. (📷 onset of N2gether Now, @jensenclan88 's favorite music video)
  2. Hardcore punk (‘80s, ‘90s, and early ‘00s)
    C058e3f2 26de 4e67 a87a 8618235d3eba
For a large swath of my life, I was a vegan straight-edge hardcore kid. It’s too much to explain in 500 characters. Basically, Straight Edge was a punk means to rebel against punk. That should say a lot about who I am. (📷 moments before getting pepper sprayed post Descendents show, circa 1996)
  3. Skateboarding. Snowboarding. Surfing.

I was never a team player. I’ve been approaching life sideways for as long as I can remember. (📷 17 years old and free, photo by Zach Cordner)
  4. Photography
    C7e42b6c 5595 4a1c a414 f2df73a7d21a
I discovered my dad's camera when I was 12. This was before digital, so I signed up for the school paper to have someone pay for my film and developing. I shot skateboarding and live concerts - a crash course in speed, aperture, composition, and most importantly, documenting a moment instead of chasing down a frame. I primarily shoot girls, lookbooks, and landscapes now. I love portraits most, because they're romantic and personal. Feels like I'm collecting stories.
  5. DeLoreans

Okay, I can unabashedly proclaim that I know everything there is to know about DeLorean Motor Co. and John Z. DeLorean himself. This is a sickness I have been weathering since childhood. (📷 Alysha Nett in my DMC-12)
  6. Blogging
    Dda6219b 4d9d 48ca 9862 baf61263f548
I signed onto Blogger in 1999 and have blogged almost every day of my life since. That’s literally over 5,000 entries - short stories, photo essays, videos... It’s sorta weird that I’ve recorded half my life on the Internet. Especially because I’m - IRL - a very private person. (📷 circa winter, 2004 in my studio with no heat)
  7. Irrigation systems
    54b2a3e3 4f0d 4e11 9bc9 34c707deb3d1
I’d rather not hire a stranger to run a 5-minute fix on my sprinklers. No, I’ll spend an entire Sunday turning my entire backyard upside down, making consecutive Home Depot trips, and electrocuting myself in the process. Twice. (let me know if you need help)
  8. Midnight drawings of ‘90s music personalities while listening to said personality’s music.
    6e3158dc f24a 4a66 9e25 104b86ae1b9f
    This is, like, a thing.
  9. T-shirt graphic design
    03ffc4b8 bc3c 46c1 8ca1 a7230637ac78
Graphic T-shirts are off the radar right now, but I’ve probably printed close to a thousand different tees at this point. I can conceptualize an entire season in an afternoon. I designed three T-shirts just today.
  10. Men's apparel design
    06a869c0 4288 423e 8f21 6307970e089c
So this is my bread and butter. I never studied design. Everything I’ve learned, I gained through building my brand. I started off by illustrating graphic T-shirts. I graduated to cut-n-sew under the mentorship of Alyasha Owerka-Moore and Ben Cheung. Warps and wefts, seam allowances, enzyme washes, I can take you through it all, but you don’t wanna see how the sausage is made. (📷 I also photographed and directed our Fall look book)
  11. Streetwear

My 50 Greatest Streetwear Brands was Complex’s most-read list. I’m currently traveling the world, working on the first-ever Streetwear documentary. People look to me as the authority, but I’m just a fan, a student. (📷 with Eli Bonerz of X-Large)
  12. Religion
My parents raised me in the church and at age 15, they gave me the choice to pursue my own spiritual path. My dad’s library was comprised of all religious literature, so we were exposed early to the Koran, Torah, Buddha’s teachings, new age-y cult-y stuff. My older brother studied theology at Harvard; he lent me his Satanic Bible. I read the Bhagavad Gita and attended Hare Krishna temples throughout college. I've read the Book of Mormon and watched it too. Christian apologetics, that's my jam.
  13. Popular books and movies
I’ll read anything. I’ll watch everything. I just finished Stephen King’s “Finders Keepers,” Aziz’s dating book, and Holly Madison’s memoir last week. I’m in “All the Light We Cannot See” for the second time (thanks @AnnaShinoda) - this round, just for the language. This past weekend, I watched Tig’s documentary, Dawg Fight, Amy Schumer’s movie, and the entire Katy Perry concert on Netflix. I don’t care, I loved all these things.
  14. Raising children
I’m no expert. They constantly remind me of that.
  15. I suck at everything else
Especially if it concerns math, money, or manly stuff.
