PSA FOR THOSE SHOPPING ON ETSY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

A note about the psychological effects of feedback.
  1. I've been on Etsy since it launched ten years ago.
  2. I've seen the site go through a lot of different changes.
  3. Right now there is a real Amazon-thing happening
amazon's great for, like, batteries. but for original art, people now want their orders next day and they want it cheaply and I don't know what exactly is going on in their heads but tbh everyone seems really grumpy.
  4. It's probably a sign of the times.
a lot of people buying for the first time on Etsy, maybe.
  5. But feedback has become really important.
it sets expectations for the buyer. But for the seller, it can make or break their business. Feedback now determines basically whether or not you show up in search results.
  6. Some sellers probably deserve what they get
in terms of feedback. I've certainly had negative experiences where people took months to send something to me or the product wasn't as described or sucked or whatever.
  7. But if your seller is the artist who makes everything they sell and makes your orders look like this:
  8. Just leave them a 5 star review.
    goddamn it.
  9. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
it takes, like, no effort on your part.
  10. And if you are not happy, just email them and tell them.
  11. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  12. Clearly they are working their ass off to make you happy.
  13. if they're worth their salt, they'll try to help.
  14. Think about how you would feel, if you put all that effort into something.
  15. For a stranger.
  16. And all they had to say was:
  17. this
this person wanted a product other than what they purchased.
  18. this
this person emailed and told me that they like to "support artists" but deducted a star because my clothing needs to be less expensive.
  19. this
this person received their $12 purchase in under 72 hours. "B minus!"
  20. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💣
  21. I have a good rating overall.
  22. Most people leave me really positive, loving reviews.
    which I really appreciate.
  23. But it's weird as an artist to have to see people quantify your artwork and life's work.
    and it sucks, honestly.
  24. I should care less.
but I actually care a lot because this is my life.
  25. But it just doesn't feel very nice.
  26. if you honestly try to go above and beyond every time
  27. And they're like,
  28. "it's great!"
  29. -1
  30. Your annual reminder that anything less that 5 stars straight up breaks an artist's heart and why would you even do this
if you don't like what you ordered or you felt something could be improved, EMAIL THEM. pan them in a review if they did something very wrong, not because you're in a bad mood.
