Not based on opinion or popularity. Strictly based on the lyrics/musical genius of the songs and the meanings behind them. Music in its truest form is a way to express what everyone feels and thinks through music.
  1. Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd
I don't think I've ever heard a song that evokes emotion like this song. Perfect example is the use of this song in The Departed (although it's a cover of the song).
  2. Mathematics - Mos Def
This song addresses major societal issues strictly using statistics and quite literally, mathematics. "Like I got, 16 to 32 bars to rock it, but only 15% of profits ever see my pockets like, 69 billion in the last 20 years spent on national defense but folks still live in fear"
  3. Hotel California - Eagles
What a crazy and trippy song. Has solidified its place as one of the great classic rock songs of all time.
  4. Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix
Realistically there could be a few Jimi Hendrix songs on this list but this one stands out the most in terms of musical perfection. Simplistically, this song is about LSD. But it's so much more. It's a song about enlightenment and self-knowledge. It's truly amazing.
  5. Children's Story - Slick Rick
Slick Rick is a master of storytelling. So much so that nobody even compares to his ability to tell a story through rapping. Just a story of a kid who chose the wrong path, told in the most creative way possible.
  6. God Save The Queen - The Sex Pistols
From the slums of London, no band was better suited to write a song about the fascist regime controlling the UK at the time. The Sex Pistols basically express their opinion of the queen and the parliament in the most blunt and direct way possible. And it's amazing.
  7. Maggot Brain - Funkadelic
This song is a trip. This jam can make your brain go to some crazy places especially if you've ingested mind-altering chemicals. The song has no lyrics but is incredibly stimulating all the way through. This song is art in the most pure definition.
  8. Scarlet Begonias - The Grateful Dead
I didn't really wanna put a dead song on here cause none of there songs are perfect and that's what makes them awesome and that's why they can play their songs so many different ways. But this song is perfect in every way.
  9. Jessica- The Allman Brothers Band
This song has no lyrics. It is a 7 minute journey composed of triumphant high points and jammy interludes.
  10. Cortez the Killer - Neil Young
Such a great melancholy song. Amazing instrumentals and vocals in this song. Perfect all the way around.
