One long brag.
  1. 1.
My first concert ever was in 2008. Vampire Weekend at the Wellmont in Montclair. Ra Ra Riot opened.
I remember I wore a pea coat and I didn't take it off the whole time because I didn't know what to do with it. I was also 78% sure that Ezra Koenig looked right at me and that he would break the law to be with me (I was fifteen).
  2. 2.
Summer of 2009 I went to All Points West and saw:
Arctic Monkeys (did not like Humbug that much so I was carefully unimpressed), Vampire Weekend (again), Tokyo Police Club, Neko Case, Fleet Foxes (the dude who is Father John Misty walked right by me), Gogol Bordello. Can you believe I did NOT see Jay Z, Coldplay, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, St. Vincent, Chairlift, My Bloody Valentine, or Crystal Castles??? Really no excuse other than that I was sixteen.
  3. 3.
Karen Elson/Grizzly Bear/Band of Horses at Williamsburg Waterfront in 2010.
Really beautiful venue. I took a picture of a couple kissing and they yelled at me. I had a Flickr to maintain so it was worth it.
  4. 4.
Silversun Pickups and Against Me! at the Wellmont, also summer 2010.
Went with a friend who had just realized (hours before!) that I had a thing for her boyfriend. It was excruciatingly awkward but the music was good. I was seventeen and sucked so deeply.
  5. 5.
Tokyo Police Club/Two Door Cinema Club at Terminal 5, winter 2011.
It was a big year for bands with "club" in their name.
  6. 6.
CSS/Sleigh Bells, May 2011, at Webster Hall.
Went with my friend Chantal, shout out to Chantal.
  7. 7.
Band of Horses, summer 2011, ???
They were touring with Kings Of Leon and then KOL cancelled. It was at some strange venue.
  8. 8.
The Walkmen/Fleet Foxes at the Williamsburg waterfront, Sept. 2011.
Really beautiful show and my first as a college student. Went with a great group of friends, including the aforementioned Chantal who observed that although we were far from the stage we had a clear view of the band. This was because "only beta males love indie music."
  9. 9.
Laura Marling/Alessi's Ark, October 2011, at Webster Hall.
My first time seeing Laura and she played all my favorites and was so beautiful and real and the easiest person on the whole planet to fall in love with.
  10. 10.
The Drums at Bowery Ballroom, November, 2011.
Went with my friend's roommate and he tried to kiss me afterwards and it was terrible. Also where was I getting all this money for concerts and train tickets in 2011???
  11. 11.
    Gov Ball, 2012.
Devendra Banhart, Fiona Apple (throughout her whole set I was crying but also making this face:😍), Explosions in the Sky (laid down for this one, highly recommend), Phantogram, Modest Mouse, Beck, Cults.
  12. 12.
Grimes/Mykki Blanco. Music Hall of Williamsburg, October 2012.
Went with a couple and they fought during the show.
  13. 13.
    Stornoway, Maxwell's, May 2013.
One of the last shows at Maxwell's!
  14. 14.
    Sky Ferreira/Solange/Vampire Weekend, Barclay's, September 2013.
Not so fond of the stadium concert experience. Solange was Polly Pocket sized from where I was sitting.
  15. 15.
    Wild Nothing's/Local Natives, Terminal 5, September 2013.
Local Natives are one of the best acts I've ever seen.
  16. 16.
Johnny Flynn, le Poisson Rouge, January 2014
Went with my best friend, Linnea. We've both been in love with Johnny since we were fourteen but behaved very respectably.
  17. 17.
Kanye West, Prudential Center, February 2014.
This is how Tim and I celebrated our first anniversary but we were joined by my sisters. We were so close to Kanye that his sweat hit us (which is not gross, but close to being baptized). My younger sister screamed every lyric back into Kanye's face with an unhinged ferocity that only sixteen year old girls can possess. Kanye West knew who Jenny Hovell was that night.
  18. 18.
    Dan Deacon/Arcade Fire, Barclay's Center, August 2014.
The whitest concert I've ever been to.
  19. 19.
Sufjan Stevens, King's Theater, May 2015.
Sufjan spent at least twenty minutes talking about Bring It On Again. I spent at least 80% of his set in tears.
  20. 20.
    Gov Ball, 2015.
St. Vincent, Charli XCX, BJÖRK, Drake, Conor Oberst, Sharon Van Etten, Marina and the Diamonds. St. Vincent's guitar solo on Rattlesnake melted my fave off. RIP my face.
  21. 21.
    Frankie Cosmos, ???, August 2015.
With Bethania, McKenzie, and Maura :-)
  22. 22.
Laura Marling, ??? some theater near Times Square, August 2015.
  23. 23.
Beach House at Webster Hall, March 16th, 2016.
My favorite band and it was a dream come true. A literal dream. It seems like it wasn't even real.
