Hi, it's me again. I got a Grey Gardens tattoo.

  1. Hi everyone, just checking in.
  2. It's almost been a year.
  3. And oh, it's definitely been a week.
  4. I hope you are all taking care of yourselves today.
  5. I myself have been near or deep in tears for the past three days, but I have also made sure to make space for love and light and laughter.
  6. My birthday was on Election Day. I spent the morning canvassing in Philly before returning to DC to celebrate and watch returns and I don't think I will ever have the capacity to reconcile the vastly different emotional landscapes of the day of November 8th and the night of November 8th.
  7. Yesterday I was sitting in a coffee shop in DC feeling sick and sad and restless. It was the worst feeling. And one I knew I never wanted to forget.
  8. I remembered this quote from Grey Gardens by Lil Edie:
"But, you see, in dealing with me the relatives didn’t know that they were dealing with a staunch character. And I tell you, if there’s anything worse than a staunch woman … S-T-A-U-N-C-H. There’s nothing worse, I’m telling you."
  9. If there's anything worse than a staunch woman...
  10. A staunch, nasty woman.
  11. Within 30 minutes I was on my way to a tattoo shop.
  12. 20 minutes later I had this:
  13. In those moments when the ink was penetrating my skin, I began to feel like myself again. I felt like I was getting some of my power back.
  14. You can't bring a staunch woman down. Not even you, President-Elect.
  15. Anyways. Love you guys. Take care of yourselves.
