Ranking the Movies of 2015

This is my personal ranking of the movies of 2015. Don't necessarily ignore the 2 or 1 star movies though, just because I didn't like them doesn't mean they were bad, they just weren't for me. Likewise, just because I gave a movie 5 stars doesn't mean you'll love it, it just means that I did love it.
  1. 1.
    Inside Out ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is one of those kids movies that's for kids and adults alike. Very moving message about emotions. Compare to: Wall-E, Up.
  2. 2.
    Room ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I haven't stopped thinking about this movie since watching it. Phenomenal acting in what is a terrifyingly sad story. I pretty much cried the entire film, and continue to cry as I think of it. What really gets you are the short narration a by the little boy as he describes his perception of the world around him. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to watch this again, but I hope I can because it would be worth it.
  3. 3.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  4. 4.
    Carol ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  5. 5.
    Cinderella ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A beautiful, true to the cartoon, retelling of the classic story. I love this because I love Cinderella, but you can't ignore the GREAT artistic design and costumes of this movie. Everyone gives wonderful performances, and while the story is just a simple fairytale, it is a timeless fairytale. Compare to: Cinderella (the original Disney movie), Maleficent.
  6. 6.
    Sicario ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
In my opinion, this is the most well-acted, well-written film of the year. The story is about an FBI agent that is tasked out to a special task-force in charge of taking down the major Mexican drug cartel, although, as you watch, you find that there is so much more going on. Compare to: House of Cards (TV).
  7. 7.
    Creed ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I know this is basically Rocky VI, but for the sixth movie in a series it was REALLY good. If you liked the Rocky movies, you'll love this story about Apollo Creed's son, who begins training with Rocky. One of Stallone's greatest performances to this day, and overall a very moving story. Highly recommended for everybody. Compare to: Rocky (duh)
  8. 8.
    Spotlight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great cast in a great movie. If you don't know, this movie is about the journalists that exposed the Catholic Church's cover-up of the priests that molested children. This movie took some very controversial subject matter and made a movie for everyone. Definitely one of the best movies of the year. Compare to: Kill the Messenger, Black Mass.
  9. 9.
    The Martian ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Top-notch space movie. It was a lot funnier than I expected, with a lot of great one-liners from Matt Damon. The whole cast did outstanding. The special effects didn't even feel like effects, so it just felt very real, which I like. Compare to: Interstellar, Cast Away.
  10. 10.
    Mad Max: Fury Road ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great action, FANTASTIC visuals, and a surprisingly good story. You'll enjoy it if you love a lot of action in your movies, or if you just love Charlize Theron. Compare to: Machete, Terminator.
  11. 11.
    Trainwreck ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of the best comedies to come out recently, for sure!! Amy Schumer kills it with non-stop, laugh-out-loud jokes and surprises with some tear-jerking moments. All around good movie, with cameos by tons of stand-up comics. Compare to: Bridesmaids.
  12. 12.
    Sisters ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  13. 13.
    Kingsman: The Secret Service ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very cool action/spy comedy. A movie for young people and older people. Plus, Colin Firth is AWESOME!! It isn't the best story ever, but it's very funny and entertaining. Compare to: Kickass, Zombieland.
  14. 14.
    The Intern ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This one really surprised me. The premise is kind of dumb- Robert de Niro starts working as Anne Hathaway's intern- but it turned out to be a very funny, cute movie. I found myself watching it over and over again. Yeah, it's a chick flick but I feel like most people would enjoy it. Compare to: The Guilt Trip, It's Complicated.
  15. 15.
    Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Loved it!! Action packed, funny, exciting! I loved the new woman they had in this movie, plus Simon Pegg played his part very well. I saw it repeatedly and never got tired of it. Compare to: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
  16. 16.
    The Big Short ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  17. 17.
    McFarland USA ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I always enjoy a good sports movie, but this one really stood out to me. I don't feel like it was anything different or new, but it just had something special. Also, I'm not a Costner fan but I thought he did great in this movie. Compare to: Million Dollar Arm, Friday Night Lights (TV).
  18. 18.
    The Hateful Eight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  19. 19.
    Mr. Holmes ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very unique take on Sherlock Holmes starring Sir Ian McKellan. I was very impressed with the story, which centered on the relationship between a retired Sherlock and his land lady's young son. Definitely a movie for all ages. Compare to: Downton Abbey (TV), Albert Nobbs.
  20. 20.
    Straight Outta Compton ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I know it's a movie about rappers, but it's for more than just fans of rap music. This is definitely an important historical film whose content is especially relevant today. Recommended for everybody. Compare to: Boyz N The Hood, 8 Mile.
  21. 21.
    Chi-Raq ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  22. 22.
    Concussion ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  23. 23.
    The Danish Girl ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  24. 24.
    Vacation ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I thought this was a great new episode in the National Lampoon series. Definitely made in the same vein as the originals, with similar jokes and characters. A must-see for any fans of these classics. Compare to: National Lampoon's Vacation, Grown-Ups.
  25. 25.
    It Follows ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It Follows is a great throwback to the 80s, while being WAY scarier than many of those classics. This is the kind of horror movie that will follow you around for a while, pun intended. Similar to: Nightmare on Elm Street, Paranormal Activity.
  26. 26.
    The Visit ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
One of M. Night Shyamalan's best movies in years. Advertised as a horror film, I would describe it as more of a comedy thriller. Classic M. Night Shyamalan twist at the end! Compare to: Signs, Cabin in the Woods.
  27. 27.
    Jurassic World ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very fun continuation of the series. The advanced special effects make it well worth it, also Chris Pratt is amazing. Overall, it was kind of cheesy, but it is FUN! Compare to: Jurassic Park, Guardians of the Galaxy.
  28. 28.
    No Escape ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What an intense, suspenseful film!! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. If you're looking for a feel-good movie, this is not it! I really enjoyed it, but it definitely gets your adrenaline going. I will say, it's not perfect, there are some ridiculous things that happen where you're like, "that would never happen" but it's still worth watching for sure. Compare to: The Impossible.
  29. 29.
    Bridge of Spies ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tom Hanks just as good as ever. The movie was more light-hearted than I expected, but I don't feel like it took away from the seriousness of the subject matter. Great movie about a story you have probably never heard. Compare to: Schindler's List, Woman in Gold.
  30. 30.
    American Ultra ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I thought this movie was hilarious but also the action was very well-done. If you like stoner movies, you'd like this, that's really all there is to that. It was dumb but good. Compare to: virtually all stoner movies, Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.
  31. 31.
    Ant-Man ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I did not want to see this, but I am SO glad I did. Seeing this confirmed that Marvel rules super hero movies! Paul Rudd was a great Ant-Man, as he brought necessary humor to the role, while Michael Douglas made us take this hero seriously, playing Ant-Man's mentor. Great introduction to a character that I'm sure we can expect to see a lot more of in upcoming Avengers films. Compare to: Guardians of the Galaxy, The Amazing Spider-Man.
  32. 32.
The End of the Tour ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is the story of David Foster Wallace, an iconic writer and professor at ISU. The movie depicts the 3 day Rolling Stone interview done a few years before Wallace tragically took his own life. A great dramatic breakout for Jason Segel as Wallace himself. and another great role for Jesse Eisenberg, playing the journalist. Very dialogue heavy, so if it's not your thing, beware. Compare to: Before Sunrise, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.
  33. 33.
    Brooklyn ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Total chick flick, but still, a beautiful story of a young Irish girl who leaves her uneventful life in Ireland behind to move to Brooklyn. I laughed, I cried, I fell in love- this movie had everything. Saoirse Ronan, most known for her childhood role in Atonement, plays the main character beautifully, proving that she is just as great an actor as an adult as she was as a child. Compare to: An Education, Titanic (on a much smaller scale).
  34. 34.
    Ex Machina ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  35. 35.
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  36. 36.
    Danny Collins ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  37. 37.
    Goodnight Mommy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  38. 38.
    The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Personally, I've never watched the show, but I've heard this is quite different. That said, this is still a very entertaining movie. I think the cast played their parts very well, and I would definitely watch the sequel. If you like action comedies, you'd enjoy this for sure. Compare to: Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.
  39. 39.
    The Revenant ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  40. 40.
The Lady in the Van ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  41. 41.
    Max ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  42. 42.
Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very funny, very raunchy comedy about the zombie apocalypse. If you don't enjoy juvenile humor, you wouldn't enjoy this, but if you're the kind of person who can enjoy the occasional poop joke, this is the movie for you. Compare to: American Ultra, Zombieland.
  43. 43.
    Clouds of Sils Maria ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  44. 44.
The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  45. 45.
    Grandma ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

  54. 54.
    Avengers 2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  55. 55.
    Suffragette ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  56. 56.
    Crimson Peak ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very unique movie that I have heard described as a "gothic romance", and I would agree. Not really a horror film, although it is somewhat gory and frightening. I quite enjoyed it. The visuals were stunning and the story was unique. Compare to: The Others.
  57. 57.
    Everest ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  58. 58.
    The Gift ⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Secret in their Eyes ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  63. 63.
    Maze Runner: Scorch Trials ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  64. 64.
    Steve Jobs ⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is less of a biography than you'd expect. The acting is great, and Aaron Sorkin's screenplay is modern day poetry, but in the end, it's two hours about a guy whose an asshole, pardon my French. Not a bad movie, but the trailer for it pretty much covered everything. Compare to: The Social Network.
  65. 65.
    The Night Before ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  66. 66.
    The Good Dinosaur ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I found this movie to be a combination of Finding Nemo and The Lion King. Not completely original, but still a great story. Of course, as with any Pixar movie, I cried at the end. Overall, though, I couldn't look past the fact that the dinosaurs could talk and the humans couldn't. Beautiful animation, though!
  67. 67.
    Burnt ⭐️⭐️⭐️
  68. 68.
    The Last Witch Hunter ⭐️⭐️⭐️

    Project Almanac ⭐️⭐️
  85. 85.
    True Story ⭐️⭐️
  86. 86.
    Rock the Kasbah ⭐️⭐️
Overall, this wasn't terrible, but it wasn't as entertaining as I thought it would be. Mostly it was just unrealistic, like, Bill Murray woulda been shot pretty early on. However, the afghani woman has a beautiful voice, so the music certainly can't be discounted. Compare to: St. Vincent (but not as good).
  87. 87.
    Paper Towns ⭐️⭐️
  88. 88.
    Magic Mike XXL ⭐️⭐️
