Concerts Attended: Apr. - Jun. 2017

Second quarter of 2017 concerts
  1. DUDU TASSA AND THE KUWAITIS
04/01/17: Philips Arena • Atlanta, GA: These guys were awesome. Best unknown to me opening act I've seen in a while.
  2. RADIOHEAD
04/01/17: Philips Arena • Atlanta, GA: My fifth time seeing one of the greatest bands that has ever been.
  3. NIYAZ
04/20/17: Alys Stephens Center • Birmingham, AL: Downtempo music combined with Persian, Turkish, and Indian instrumentation that's bathed in overwhelming visuals and even incorporates Sufi dancing.
  4. moe.
04/21/17: Centennial Olympic Park • Atlanta, Georgia: I didn't care for this band *at all.* Can't remember being more bored in a while. I didn't even hate it, I just wanted it to be over. Meandering background noise.
  5. TREY ANASTASIO BAND
04/21/17: Centennial Olympic Park • Atlanta, Georgia: They were in the zone last night. Hadn't seen them in 2-3 years and it was totally worth the drive over. Can't wait to get the recordings of this one.
  6. SLIGHTLY STOOPID
04/22/17: Centennial Olympic Park • Atlanta, GA: They weren't just slightly stupid, they were completely stupid. Trying to repress the memory of this show already.
  7. WIDESPREAD PANIC
04/22/17: Centennial Olympic Park • Atlanta, GA: I really only wanted to see Friday and Sunday of this festival, but I had the three day pass so I might as well go right?
  8. WEEN
04/23/17: Centennial Olympic Park • Atlanta, GA: So happy Ween is back together and that I got to see them...even if it was cold and raining and I missed 1/4 of the set due to a wreck and subway issues.
  9. RUSSIAN CIRCLES
04/28/17: Iron City • Birmingham, AL: They only got a 30 minute set, which is about four songs for them. They were still awesome.
  10. MASTODON
04/28/17: Iron City • Birmingham, AL: My fifth Mastodon show and they keep getting better. They've always been good, but last night was positively ferocious.
  11. MIDNIGHT OIL
05/06/17: Center Stage • Atlanta, GA: Incredible how these guys haven't missed a beat despite a fifteen year hiatus. Just came out firing on all cylinders for 2.5 hours. I hope this reunion tour isn't their last.
  12. MONO
05/09/17: Saturn • Birmingham, AL: Really great post-rock band from Tokyo .
  13. SIR RICHARD BISHOP
05/10/17: Syndicate Lounge • Birmingham, AL: Good heavens. I still haven't processed what I just witnessed. Just majestic and sublime and fluid and transcendent. Go see him if he's coming to your town.
  14. SHONEN KNIFE
05/11/17: Syndicate Lounge • Birmingham, AL: Gotta love a garage/punk/pop band whose songs are almost all about food. 🤘🏼
  15. THE STOLEN FACES
05/19/27: WorkPlay Theatre • Birmingham, AL: I'm not normally a "tribute act" or "cover band" kind of guy, but I make the occasional exception when the source material is used as a vehicle for their own improv. Not life changing or anything, but was a fun night out with friends and the band did pretty well with the Dead's most famous show.
  16. SIGUR RÓS
05/23/17: Fox Theatre • Atlanta, GA: My sixth Sigur Rós show. While I miss the mini-orchestra they normally tour with, these trio shows are still great. Light show is off the charts too. Just a completely magical spectacle. A feast for the eyes and ears.
  17. SIGUR RÓS
06/12/17: Tennessee Performing Arts Center • Nashville, TN: SR show number 7 for me tonight. First time I've never had floor seats for them, but it was still fantastic as usual!
  18. NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS
06/16/17: Auditorium Theatre • Chicago, IL: Nick Cave never ceases to amaze. I've also never sat so so high up at a venue. We were on the sixth floor! 😳
  19. ROBYN HITCHCOCK
06/17/17: Old Town School of Folk Music • Chicago, IL: Not one I would've sought out on my own, but my friends were way into going so I went. Was entertaining, but a bit pricey IMO.
  20. SHANE PARISH
06/18/17: Elastic Arts • Chicago, IL: Second time seeing him this year. Also saw him at the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville in March.
  21. TOMEKA REID QUARTET
06/19/17: Jay Pritzker Pavilion • Chicago, IL: Badass jazz band that heavily featured Mary Halvorsen on guitar...who I'm a big fan of.
  22. MAKAYA MCCRAVEN
06/20/17: The Hideout • Chicago, IL: Great jazz drummer out of Chicago and his band. A monstrous performance. Can't wait to hear the tapes off of this one.
  23. YONATAN GAT
06/21/17: Constellation • Chicago, IL: Former guitarist for Monotonix goes solo. Was good, but I like it better on record. I was also super tired though so that probably skewed my enjoyment.
  24. METZ
06/24/17: Logan Square • Chicago, IL: Great little neighborhood festival that even managed to pull some acts down from Toronto.
  25. CIRCUIT DES YEUX
06/25/17: Logan Square • Chicago, IL: So much good music coming out of Chicago these days. CDY is great.
  26. JAGA JAZZIST
06/25/17: Lincoln Hall • Chicago, IL: Great Norwegian jazz, rock, space band. Love pulling two shows in one night!
