STAGES OF DEALING WITH AN ALCOHOLIC LOVED ONE

In any order
  1. Acceptance
    We can get through this
  2. Anger
    How are you doing this?
  3. Saving
I can help you. Whatever you need
  4. Sickness
Worrying yourself into illness. Over and over.
  5. Grief
This is so sad. How is this happening?
  6. Enabling
    I'm listening, I'm here
  7. Asking for help
Talking to friends, talking to counsellors, Al anon
  8. Fixing
This is what you need to do
  9. Denial
    She's getting better!
  10. Avoidance
    Not dealing with it
  11. Hope
This has to get better at some point
  12. Despair
This is so bad, so often for so long
  13. Distance
I cannot help you. Only you can help yourself
  14. Fear
What if this is the last time I see you?
  15. Mourning
You are not the person I loved anymore
  16. Finished
I can't participate in this drama anymore. I'm done.
  17. Sadness
    So much
  18. Moving on
I have to take care of myself first. I can't fix anyone else but myself. It is not my job to help people who don't want to be helped
  19. Giving up
    I cannot control this
  20. Hope
Things may or may not get better. But life goes on. I only have to make myself the best I can be.
  21. Sad (again)
I miss you. I really really miss you. I wish things were different. I wish I could have saved you. I'm so sorry. I'm so so sorry. I wish I was stronger. I wish I could be strong enough for both of us. I only have enough left to try to find brightness in my life on my own.
