Roman emperor, stoic philosopher. Born in Rome AD 121. Died on the Northern frontiers of the Roman Empire AD 180. I like best that he wrote for himself, not intending to be published.
  1. 'Every hour of the day give vigorous attention, as a Roman and as a man, to the performance of the task in hand with precise analysis, with a affected dignity, with human sympathy, with dispassionate justice - and to vacating your mind from all other thoughts.'
  2. 'So where should a man direct his endeavor? Here only - a right mind, action for the common good, speech incapable of lies,...'
  3. 'You should take no action unwillingly, selfishly, uncritically, or with conflicting motives.'
