Best Places to Ride a Bike ➕

List tailored to real rides on road or MTN bikes. Suggestions welcome @aro @paullieb
  1. South SF Bay Area
The length of coast and adjacent mountains between Santa Cruz and San Francisco is largely deserted and largely DOPE. Road and MTB.
  2. Languedoc-Roussillon, France
This whole region is one of the best kept secrets in France. Beautiful, topographically diverse, dope inexpensive wines, but pretty desolate. Only done road rides and hikes here, but have to imagine MTB would measure up.
  3. MTB: Sun Valley, Idaho
The road riding isn't great but the mountain biking is ridiculous. Days of gorgeous single track, and insanely well maintained. I'm glad I don't pay taxes there.
  4. Tuscany
Cliche, but it's cliche for a reason: It's obscenely beautiful.
  5. North SF Bay Area
Marin, in general, is glorious but also way more crowded that South Bay. That's my only criticism. Fantastic road and MTB.
  6. Catskill Mtns, NY
Specifically Hunter/windham/tannersville region. Less than 3 hours from NYC, high enough elevation that summer weather is perfect. Dozens of great road rides, totally quiet. Only people up there are second home owners and like 53 year rounders. Several ski Mtns open their trials to MTB in summer.
  7. Seville, Spain
There are bike lanes everywhere, and the small size of the city makes biking the best way to get from one side of the city to another. Plus, biking along the river is absolutely stunning.

  8. Moab, UT
Overlapping into Arches National Park and around the Colorado River. Some of the best mountain biking! But a lot is slickrock and tough terrain. You need to know what you're doing.

  13. Santa Fe, NM
Endless miles of single track right outside of town (and all over northern New Mexico - though the road riding here is trash!)

  14. Stanley Park in Vancouver is beautiful and has great bike paths, which are suitable for even the most hapless or inexperienced riders (who me?)

  15. The bike path from Venice to Santa Monica and beyond
Great people watching, beautiful weather, ocean mist, easy detours for delicious food, great pit stops, best at sunset

  16. To the end of the cul-de-sac, on the 4th of July, for about 20 seconds.
    For the first time ever!
