Sk8er Boi: A Study in Songwriting

Avril Lavigne's 2002 number 1 song has been on my mind recently. It was popular, but is there more to it than meets the eye?
  1. He was a boy. She was a girl. Can I make it any more obvious?
You know what, Avril? I don't think it gets much more obvious than that. But why are you being so combative so early in the song?
  2. He was a punk. She did ballet. What more can I say?
Well, I can see where this could be going, but you probably could say a bit more
  3. He wanted her. She'd never tell secretly she wanted him as well
Ah, teenage romance. Actually, a lot of times, it's not just teenagers. It's hard to put yourself out there and tell someone that you want them. Good point Avril! Thanks for showing us inside the human brain!
  4. But all of her friends. Stuck up their nose. They had a problem with his baggy clothes
This was a big issue in the early 2000s. People saw baggy clothes as a sign of people who weren't upstanding citizens. I guess her friends were feeding into those stereotypes
  5. He was a skater boy. She said see you later boy. He wasn't good enough for her
Ugh. She's going along with her friends. This happens a lot, especially to the younger generation. Although, as independent as older people are, I'm sure they still keep their friends opinions in mind when they make decisions. Is Avril deeper than we know?!
  6. She had a pretty face. But her head was up in space. She needed to come back down to earth
This girl. A pretty face and good ballet skills won't get you far. Well, it could get you far. But your backwards thinking will bring you down
  7. Five years from now. She sits at home Feeding the baby. She's all alone
Now, I think Avril is making it seem like this girl made a poor life decision and is now a single mom or all alone. But maybe she wanted to be independent? Maybe she was in an abusive relationship and decided to leave and take her child with her?! What if her partner was just at the store? Too much, Avril. Not cool
  8. She turns on tv. Guess who she sees. Skater boy rockin' up MTV
Good for him!! A good skater AND a music hit! Those baggy pants didn't bring him down!
  9. She calls up her friends. They already know. And they've all got Tickets to see his show
She stayed friends with these horrible people? And they bought tickets without even asking her to go? Ouch. Should we really be calling them friends?
  10. She tags along. Stands in the crowd. Looks up at the man that she turned down
This is a tough thing to do. Good for her, facing her demons. Admitting she made a mistake. She seems like the real hero in this song, after the initial decision. But people change. People grow. I guess that's the point of this song!
  11. He was a skater boy. She said see you later boy. He wasn't good enough for her
Right. Thanks for dredging up the past, Avril. Can you not see that she's trying?!
  12. Now he's a super star. Slamming on his guitar. Does your pretty face see what he's worth?
I'm pretty sure she realizes it now. But then again, we don't know much about him as a person. Just because he's good at music and skating, that doesn't mean he'd be a good fit for her. Plus, she could still be with someone. Or maybe she wants to be single for a whole. Stop trying to act like you know l everything, Avril
  13. Sorry girl but you missed out. Well tough luck that boy's mine now
Oooohhhhh. Avril is with this skater musician now? So this is like a revenge song?
  14. We are more than just good friends. This is how the story ends
Although I'm happy for Avril, I can't help but think this song was made for all the wrong reasons.
  15. Too bad that you couldn't see. See the man that boy could be. There is more that meets the eye. I see the soul that is inside
Yes, Avril is able to not judge him. But she's super judging this girl, hard. So is she really that good a person in this?
  16. He's just a boy. And I'm just a girl. Can I make it any more obvious?
At this point, no, you can't
  17. We are in love. Haven't you heard how we rock each others world?
Well, you've told us that he's yours, and more than just a friend. So I naturally assumed you were in love. Good for you, though, for rocking each other's worlds. Then again, two musicians should be able to rock! Haha. Get it?
  18. I'm with the skater boy. I said see you later boy. I'll be back stage after the show
That's sweet. She goes to his concerts.
  19. I'll be at the studio. Singing the song we wrote. About a girl you used to know
Ewww this is not the right way to act. You know nothing about her. Are you jealous of her? I expected more from you, Avril. Especially after "Complicated". 😟
