What's Your Pop Culture Gap?

Everyone has that thing. That TV show, that book series, that slew of movies that is totally zeitgeist-y and hugely popular...but you just never caught on. Not just a single book/movie/etc, but an entire collection that you have missed. For me, it's not a source of pride that I've not experienced these...I just haven't gotten around to it yet
  1. James Bond movies
Never seen a single one. Nada. For reals. This is especially strange for a total Anglophile such as myself. Is this something that needs to be remedied? Which Bond to start with? No one's ever passionately vouched for them, so I just never really mustered any interest.
  2. Game of Thrones
Missed out on this in every way. No books, no TV show. Yes, I do have HBO. No, I don't have an aversion to long books or violent imagery. Here's the thing - if I already have endured spoilers for so many major events (in both books and movies) from loved ones chatting it up, then is it still worth it to dive in? Books or TV? If TV, how many episodes required to give the show an honest go to see if I'm hooked or not?
  3. Pretty much every Marvel movie
The slight exception is that I did see The Avengers (on DVD, comfort of my couch) because Joss Whedon. I still have not seen any standalone films on Iron Man/Thor/Capt. America/Hulk, et al. It must be noted that I found the plot convoluted, but I fully realize this is probably because I missed any fun callbacks to previous films and character standout moments. If someone with awesome taste convinces me I've missed out, I'd be willing to give it a go (just tell me where to start)
  4. Harry Potter
This gap is on purpose, because I refuse to read the books or watch the movies because I'm just not interested in the concept, but yeah I still have no idea what's going on when you're talking about Griffindors or Mufflers or whatever. It's not that I just "haven't gotten around to it" but I'm actively avoiding it.

  5. Starbucks Coffee
Never been a big coffee drinker and especially never go to Starbucks. No I do not have a favorite order, but sure lets talk.

  6. The Lord of the Rings
how do I even begin to describe how unappealing and uninteresting I find LOTR? People tend to act like I am putting them in physical pain if I mention I tried to watch the movies and couldn't even make it through one. Yes I know the books & movies are hugely popular and yes I know the movies won tons of awards but I am just really not interested in elves and that weird goblin dude trying to get that ring

  7. Star Wars
Neither of my parent were into Star Wars so I didn't see any of them as a kid. Not many of my friends are into Star Wars so there was no pressure or need to see them. Now that I'm 25 and haven't seen them it seems like a very daunting task to watch them all.

  8. Mad Men
I just never caught on to this show. It didn't sound very interesting to me at first and by the time everyone was talking about it, it was too far along. Oh well.

  9. Frozen
I'm a big Classic Disney fan, but idk man, the bigger this movie got, the more animosity I felt toward it. I have no reason not to like it, but at this point I feel like I have to hold strong. It's like a badge of honor 🙃

  10. Breaking Bad
While I know the basic principle, I've never watched more than one episode, and I intend to keep it that way. There are plenty of things I find more interesting than vigilante middle-aged white men. If your favorite character ever is Walter White I have questions and concerns.

  11. Grey's Anatomy
(this is such a good list idea! I think about this all the time and could probably suggest 28 things for this list omg)

  13. Gossip Girl
I've tried to give this show a good solid chance, but the way they jump around from relationship to relationship just makes me mad.

Not a series, but I never saw this. I don't even know how I managed to not see it in college - it was such a thing!

  17. The X Files
Never watched one episode. Same for MANY TV shows-Lost, Grey's Anatomy, This is Us, Desperate Housewives, Twin Peaks, Breaking Bad and especially Game of Thrones-even the audiobook couldn't save it for me.

  20. 90's music
Everyone my age pretty much came into their own here and have a bunch of great 90's music hardwired into their brains. But I sort of skipped that part and have a clueless, deer in the headlights look when people ask me something from this era.(or anything more recent, tbh)

  23. Simpsons
As proven by the gif above, this show was deemed inappropriate when I was a child. I didn't start watching it once I was old enough because I thought it'd be cancelled by now 🤦🏽‍♀️

  24. 50 Shades
I read 40 pages of the first book and had a red pen out correcting the writer. I just didn't at all care for the style the writer used. Insulted my intelligence. Didn't see the movies because I don't wanna see Don Johnson's kid naked.

  32. Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network cartoons
Every time I ever found myself watching them, all I could think waswhy would I watch anything else when there's Disney cartoons to watch?" EXCEPTION: Looney Toons.
