This is the 3rd year in a row that I've gone up to cover Feast PDX. I've been to a number of other food festivals around the country but FeastPDX continues to impress me as the focus is on quality of food as opposed to celebrity chefs & personalities (which a lot of other festivals are about). Here's some highlights from the weekend.
  1. Gobi Manchurian from Bollywood Theater
    Dcfae79b 2ce5 4807 bd53 1194a13086d3
This might have been the only dish I went back for seconds. That's saying a lot. I NEVER go back for seconds.
  2. Grinder Sandwich from Olympic Provisions
    D3cd7663 3a63 4fa2 82fd b8cb508e2c08
    As epic as it looks.
  3. Mei Lin's pork belly pate egg roll.
    04d47cec 50dd 4337 98cb e0facc91995e
I mean look at it! I almost didn't want to eat it. Almost.
  4. Eggslut's egg dip sandwich
    E6c14afa af63 4dc8 a42d 31a4297e4d1e
I am baffled by the fact that I still have yet to go there when I visit LA. What is wrong with me?
  5. Franklin BBQ spit roasted cow's head
    123a3a00 8b4b 4f7b ac6f 2030fa399a0a
The only time where I pulled the "Hey, I'm media, can I get a 'beauty one' to photograph?" so I can cut in line. Sorry folks in line. I'm THAT guy.
  6. Little T Baker's Sfogliatelle filled with Greek yogurt and fruit from the forest.
    Bae2101a 9c09 42a2 8520 b5fdc5099332
I fully admit that I was taking a photo of Chef Tim Healea's biceps. But his sweet filled dessert was seriously as delicious as he looked serving it.
  7. Nong's smoked version of her Khao Man Gai
    86bc47c3 6318 433a b231 20d8e772c05c
I love Nong's Khao Man Gai, which is usually a poached chicken but she grilled and smoked it for the event and it took it to a new level.
  8. Illama Sockeye handroll from Bamboo Sushi
    2fda2d17 61f6 4ae0 a1b6 17c8123f5de8
Made to order, the line was long but worth it. If @AJ was there, he would have eaten 3 or 4 of these.
  9. Rabbit Paella from Crown Paella
    D32edefd b602 4501 9a47 bf123d46f56a
Definitely a showstopper in terms of presentation and preparation during the Smoked! Event.
  10. Buttermilk fudge ice cream with peanuts, candied ginger, lime zest & shaved bottarga from Fifty Licks & Chef Jenn Louis
    88557868 f72d 43af 8ef4 99739cbc9904
This blew up on my FB page when I posted it because folks thought the bottarga (a cured fish roe) was an OUTRAGEOUS addition. Jenn Louis is known for doing stuff like this so it didn't surprise me. I'm not a huge fan of umami w/sweet cold desserts (like blueberry & miso soft serve from Milk Bar or Parmesan and ham ice cream from Humphry Slocombe) but this one worked for me. The bottarga was really subtle and you only just noticed it at the end.
  11. Foietella - foie gras & chocolate by Xocolatl de David
    Edbdc9cc 22ab 48f7 80e3 15e2e54bfd6c
Call it gimmicky if you want but the crowd went crazy insane for this.
  12. Grilled wagyu with cider reduction, horseradish, rosemary & charred corn salad by RingSide Steakhouse
    975b6198 7e21 4f09 bb3a 6c8958c4c8aa
I wanted more. But at this point I was full. Damn my tiny stomach.
  13. Bonus: Adam Sappington of the Country Cat posing for me.
    7c13d740 c1b6 4a92 991c 460d93a7513a
Like a bad ass that he is. His smoked grilled steak was killer. I think I have a shot of it in my dSLR camera but not my iPhone here.
  14. I'll be posting tons more photos next week on my blog. I just have to sort and process them. These are strictly my iPhone ones.
    And now I am hungry....
