OBVIOUS AND OVERUSED RULES THAT I LIVE BY

this is an ongoing list
  1. 1.
    be kind and courteous
  2. 2.
    be supportive
  3. 3.
    be honest
  4. 4.
    be patient
  5. 5.
hold the door open for people
  6. 6.
always say please and thank you
  7. 7.
tell the people you love that you love them, frequently
  8. 8.
    listen
listen when people are telling you a story, ranting, or even talking about absolute nonsense. bring it up in a later conversation to let them know you were listening. I, for one, love when people do this. it has come to my attention that I'm not the greatest listener so this is something I'm trying to improve on
  9. 9.
say what you mean and mean what you say
if you tell someone you love them when you don't really love them, you're basically satan
  10. 10.
tell people how you really feel about them
if you like someone, tell them. if you don't like someone, don't waste their time and string them along
  11. 11.
    don't bottle up your emotions
something I've been working on for a while. whether you need a good cry or want to tell someone that something they did is bugging you, let it all out
  12. 12.
get help when you need it
this spans from schoolwork to your mental health. either way, don't try to go through things alone
  13. 13.
don't let it get to you
don't dwell on things you can't change. just try to improve next time
  14. 14.
    don't be afraid of failure
  15. 15.
swallow your goddamn pride and apologize
  16. 16.
    don't sugar coat things
I try to be blunt and not beat around the bush. 9 times out of 10, it works out for the better
  17. 17.
don't blame others for your problems
  18. 18.
listen to music in the dark
I do this a lot. it's very chill and relaxing but also when I need to wallow in self-pity I will do this listening to there there by radiohead and two-headed boy part two by neutral milk hotel. would not recommend
  19. 19.
return borrowed items without being reminded
whether it's money or a pen
  20. 20.
    keep a journal
    venting is always good
  21. 21.
take the stairs instead of the escalator/elevator
I've only started living by this rule in fear that I'll gain the freshman fifteen, but hey it still counts
  22. 22.
    eat an apple a day
it'll make you feel less gross than coffee would
  23. 23.
    help your parents with technology
even if your dad asks how to record a tv show a million times, help him out. after all, he did raise you
  24. 24.
compliment your parents on their cooking
  25. 25.
    be respectful of food workers
so what the barista gave you two shots of espresso when you asked for three? they're only doing their best
  26. 26.
    always clean up after yourself
  27. 27.
    don't major-bash
I seen this all too often with let's say, engineering majors bashing arts majors. respect the fact that different people have different skill sets
  28. 28.
    don't highlight in textbooks
it just doesn't look nice and it's gonna lower the resale value
  29. 29.
help people with strollers and old people with trolleys get off the bus
  30. 30.
don't spoil books/movies/tv shows for people
a few years ago (when I still watched gossip girl) someone revealed who gossip girl was to me and I was nowhere near finishing the show. I can't remember who that person was but I still haven't forgiven them
  31. 31.
don't spoil books/movies/tv shows for yourself
if you're catching up on a tv show, DO NOT read articles/wikipedia pages about it online. I've done this countless times and I never learn
  32. 32.
if someone comes in late to class, offer them your notes
  33. 33.
give people hair ties when they need them (even though they won't get returned)
this ties in to the returning borrowed items rule. return those goddamn hair ties!
  34. 34.
    thoughtful gifts over expensive gifts
giving someone something that reminds you of them is much more thoughtful than giving someone an expensive gift that they might not even like
  35. 35.
don't wait until the night before the exam to open a textbook for the first time
  36. 36.
don't rely on a cellphone alarm to wake you up in the morning
I should probably pay attention to this rule especially seeing as it still hasn't sunk into my head and I've slept in countless times
  37. 37.
don't take 10 minutes in a public bathroom when there are people waiting
  38. 38.
don't leave the water tank in the keurig empty
  39. 39.
    masturbate
  40. 40.
don't eat loud/messy food in quiet public places
    I do this a lot
