1. 1. Green Room
A perfect horror movie that is so visceral, it merits a second viewing to actually appreciate how layered it is.
  2. 2. The Invitation
A horror movie that plays with audience expectations with a twist in the final shot that will be unmatched this year.
  3. 3. OJ: Made in America
Technically, it had a one-week theatrical release. As if The People vs OJ Simpson wasn't already the best piece of television this year, along comes the best documentary of the decade.
  4. 4. Ghostbusters
Funny, some fun "boo!" moments, and the leads are all scene stealers at one point or another.
  5. 5. Finding Dory
Even Pixar's lighter and simpler fare is still more of a human comedy and emotionally involving than most live action movies.
  6. 6. Tickled
One of the most fascinating documentaries and the documentary Catfish could have been.
  7. 7. 10 Cloverfield Lane
A tense, claustrophobic movie that has a final act you'll either love or hate. I'm in the former camp.
  8. 8. Deadpool
This is a movie they may not hold up in years to come or even on second viewing, but my theatrical experience was a fun one and it's the only comic book adaptation this year that didn't disappoint.
