I suppose "deep cuts" is a relative phrase. This is for all ma MT QTs out there!
  1. Hey There-THE PAJAMA GAME
This is a guy recording a memo to himself, advising himself to stop pursuing a woman. He then listens back to this recording and converses with it. Later on, there's a reprise sung by the aforementioned woman wherein she's admitting to herself how much she loves him. Gratifying storytelling moments that you can really only get away with in musical theater. WATCH John Raitt get turned down by Doris Day and sing this: http://bit.ly/1PjoM58
  2. You'll Never Get Away From Me-GYPSY
Are there any musical theater undergrads out there who could write an essay comparing and contrasting Mama Rose and Kris Jenner?? This song is so goofy--it takes place in a Chinese restaurant where Rose is stealing silverware--but enjoyable. Gypsy has so many incredible duet moments melodically and the ending of this song feels so good to me. @katmills can attest that I am also VERY into the ascending vocal line in "If Mama Was Married."
  3. Somebody, Somewhere-THE MOST HAPPY FELLA
"Somebody lonely/ wants me to care/ wants me, of all people/ to notice him there." Love this phrasing. Simplistic language, but it feels like each line is a deeper revelation.
  4. Out Of My Dreams-OKLAHOMA
The dream ballet! I wish there was a dream ballet sequence in everything! WATCH the gorgeous Shirley Jones: http://bit.ly/1F2KIBY
  5. When Did I Fall in Love?-FIORELLO
Damn, this is such a fun soprano song. That is one the nerdiest sentences I've ever written and can just picture my brother making fun of me for it already!
  6. It's Wonderful-ANNIE, GET YOUR GUN
This is one of those duets in the vein of "People Will Say We're in Love"-Oklahoma and "If I Loved You"-Carousel, where the characters talk about love conceptually in order to mask their true feelings from the other person or themselves. And I'm all about those romantic subtext scenes across all mediums, people!
  7. Follow Your Heart-URINETOWN
Funny AND gorgeous! Can I date this song? The acting from Hunter Foster and Jennifer Laura Thompson on the OG cast recording is perfect. This song also has a sweet harmonic moment in the last line during "laughter and gladness" that kills me every time.
  8. Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful?-Cinderella
This is musical theater confection. It is so surface level and sappy, but if you get on board, it gives you everything you feel after watching a wonderful romantic comedy.
  9. Good Thing Going & Not a Day Goes By-MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG
I so badly want this to be a movie. This is like Memento meets Barton Fink meets The Social Network, but a heartwarming musical! This whole show is so smart and beautiful and I couldn't decide between all the songs so I chose two. But aren't all the songs in this show about love? AM I RIGHT OR AM I RIGHT?
  10. Origin of Love-HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH
Based of Plato's myth of love. I love how it describes sex as trying to shove yourself back together with the other half of yourself. And recognizing that someone is your love because you have the same pain deep inside you. These lyrics are BEAUTIFUL.
  11. A little priest, Sweeney Todd. Love song. She's falling in love with him. He's falling in love with meat.

  21. Somewhere That's Green, Little Shop of Horrors

  22. Love and Love Alone -- The Visit
The darkest love song currently on Broadway. Lyrics include, "When you're young, feeling oh so strong, what can prove you wrong? Love and love alone." And, "So, enjoy all the time there is. If you're his, be his. Make each day your own. When tomorrow's come and your heart is stone, what has made you numb? Love and love alone."
