MY TOP 5 PERFORMANCES OF 2016 BY AN ACTOR IN A MOVIE

Order is from 1-5. This is for any role (lead, supporting, or otherwise)
  1. Denzel Washington in FENCES
It's Denzel doing what Denzel does best - out-acting everyone in sight (except Viola).
  2. Mahersala Ali in MOONLIGHT
This was the opposite of Denzel - a beautifully understated performance. Mahersala knows how to just melt into a character like no other.
  3. Joel Edgerton in LOVING
If you've seen the documentary which this movie is based on, you know just how amazing Joel is in this part. He embodies Richard Loving.
  4. Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders, and Trevante Rhodes in MOONLIGHT
This is kind of cheating, but MOONLIGHT has so many great performances. These three actors do a magnificent job as Chiron in three different acts of the play that is his life.
  5. Michael Shannon in NOCTURNAL ANIMALS
I really wasn't feeling NOCTURNAL ANIMALS. The story within the story should've been it's own movie. Michael Shannon proves a great actor can be great in a mediocre film.
