Broadway Music I Love (That Isn't Hamilton)

  1. Johanna // Sweeney Todd
I heard a seventeen year old sing at my friend's high school musical in 2014 and I believe a more perfect performance of it has never been recorded. But this one from the 2012 London cast is my second favorite: https://youtu.be/Mntp8LgUbJU
  2. Ring of Keys // Fun Home
Beautiful beautiful specific lyrics, so good for belting. This performance at the Tonys last year blew me away. (And everybody else, but. You know.) https://youtu.be/pMAuesRJm1E
  3. The Riddle // The Scarlet Pimpernel
The local amphitheater performed this show when I was in tenth grade. By those standards it shouldn't have been good, but it really, really was. Everyone in my high school theatre was obsessed with this song for the next year. https://youtu.be/DKR0-lg3WMk
  4. When Your Mind's Made Up // Once
All the music in this show is performed live by the actors. Everything about it is powerful and raw and very anti-Broadway. Seeing this song performed live made me cry. https://youtu.be/b96kqhJVxBM
  5. Chip On My Shoulder // Legally Blonde
The entire Legally Blonde musical was filmed for MTV. It's all on YouTube and it is FLAWLESS. To me, the musical is funnier, smarter, more feminist, and way more romantic than the movie. In this song, Christian Borle plays my favorite version of Emmett: https://youtu.be/A7oyDs2K7I8
  6. Blackout // In the Heights
I've never seen In the Heights, but to me this song is the best example of what Lin is capable of. He tells so many stories so quickly and powerfully and clearly in these four minutes. https://youtu.be/fyF4nBwUyFo
  7. Opening Up // Waitress
This musical is the warmest, sweetest thing we were blessed with in 2016. If you need convincing before you listen to the whole soundtrack on Spotify, listen to this: https://youtu.be/iaJezyqTDUM
  8. No More // Into the Woods
I'll never forgive the 2014 movie for cutting this song. To me it's the most powerful part of the show. https://youtu.be/h15HP_W4yrg
  9. "Me, Who Am I?" // Cinderella
When Cinderella re-opened on Broadway, they added new songs and plot lines to the Rogers and Hammerstein original, that finally made this musical...well...good. This is my favorite. It doesn't hurt that Santino Fontana sang it in the OBC. https://youtu.be/FYluoka1qkU
