ONE MORE THING STORIES, MY RANKING

  1. 1.
J.C. Audetat, Translator of Don Quixote
So wonderful, so subtle and genius a twist at the end. I remain so, so in love with this story. 💯
  2. 2.
    Sophia
I normally hate dwelling on sad stories, and try not to revisit them. But this one is so thought-provoking through its melancholy, and so tender that I reread it. Could a robot be more affected--more devastated--by love because she is capable of fathoming the concept of finite? And do humans get over love by using a comforting yet falsely-perceived idea of life providing us infinite experiences? This was the point that made me realize this book ranged from light comedy to deep, serious stories.
  3. 3.
    The Rematch
Perfect story to start the collection with that really drew me in. It was 2014 and all I knew about B.J. Novak was he played a jerk on The Office, so I read the first story in the bookstore trying to figure out what kind of book it was. By no means completely representative of the book as a whole, but a good first impression that, bottom line, sold me. Because why is the lesson of The Tortoise and the Hare, "slow and steady wins the race"?
  4. 4.
"Everyone Was Singing the Same Song": The Duke of Earl Recalls His Trip to America in June of 1962
I just love how the duke's fond memory of the spirit of America is based on innocent ignorance. And wouldn't that be the most ideal spirit of America? Everyone singing the same song?
  5. 5.
No One Goes to Heaven to See Dan Fogelberg
  6. 6.
    Monster: The Rollercoaster
  7. 7.
Kellogg's (or: The Last Wholesome Fantasy of the Middle-School Boy)
I like how as a longer story, there are several twists you don't see coming. Sometimes I like stories/books because you can predict a storyline, and when things you expect happen, you seem simpatico with the author. Sometimes I like when you can't predict what's going to happen in a story at all, but it feels pleasant to you by its innovation. The stories in this book tend to trend toward the latter for me. And I find that cozy.
  8. 8.
Walking on Eggshells (or: When I Loved Tony Robbins)
  9. 9.
One of These Days, We Have to Do Something About Willie
It's interesting how the circumstances of this story are so far from my life...I will never find myself staging an intervention-turned-vegas-blowout...but there are certain touches that are so relatable.
